Armour Dance Theatre Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Armour Dance Theatre is a cornerstone of the South Florida dance community with a rich history dating back to 1949. Originally founded as The Miami Conservatory and the Miami Ballet Company by renowned classical ballet dancer Thomas Armour, the institution has evolved over the decades, changing its name to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet in 1996 and, more recently, to Armour Dance Theatre in 2021. This name change reflects the broader scope of its mission and dance offerings. The academy has built a stellar reputation not only for its exceptional dance training but also for its profound commitment to community outreach and social justice.
More than a typical dance school, Armour Dance Theatre is a social justice organization dedicated to using dance as a vehicle to address inequities and open doors for children and families across Miami-Dade County. While they have a strong track record of producing professional dancers who go on to companies like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and American Ballet Theatre, their ultimate goal is to give every child a pathway to success, whether in dance or in other fields. The academy offers comprehensive after-school and summer camp programs in multiple locations, providing not only dance instruction but also academic support, social-emotional learning, and even help with navigating other challenges.
The academy is known for its experienced and caring faculty, many of whom are former students who have returned as teachers and role models. This creates a powerful cycle of success and mentorship. The administrative staff, including Janice and Ruth, are consistently praised by parents for their welcoming and helpful nature, making the enrollment process a smooth and pleasant experience for new and returning families. This strong sense of community and support is a defining feature of Armour Dance Theatre, making it a beloved institution in the South Miami area. It is the only community dance school in Florida to be accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Pre-collegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS), a testament to its high standards and quality of training.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I was looking for a ballet studio for my 6 year old granddaughter and was referred to Armour Dance Theatre. I went with my granddaughter to see the studio and met with Janice who was very welcoming and informative; a real pleasure to deal with. I then followed up with a phone call to start my granddaughter in their Saturday summer program and was blessed to deal with Ruth. She helped me set up an account to pay and enroll my granddaughter and welcomed us to the Armour Dance family. This past Saturday my daughter took my granddaughter for the first class with Ms. Rachel, the teacher for that age group, and was extremely pleased with her and her manner of teaching. I was able to view some videos my daughter took, and as a previous ballet student and teacher, was extremely impressed with her teaching and her interactions with the students. I have enrolled my granddaughter for their upcoming school year ballet classes, highly recommend this studio and feel fortunate to have found them.
July 05 · Sera CotareloMy first ballet school with my daughter is almost a year with wonderful experience. Best teacher ever Ms. Rachel and her assistant always with nice attitude. Ms. Janice and Ms. Ruth always to help in any questions or concerns.
May 05 · Ariadna GonzalezWhoever is responsible for updating their classpass account has to do better. I drove from Broward to the Saturday class, paid for street parking, only to find the studio was closed. I won’t be returning
March 29 · dreamsbylaurenThe teachers are amazing and get right to the point! You get to make new friends who will be dear to your heart for the rest of your life, while working hard. Love it!
October 04 · Cristina SanchezADT is a treasure. I am so grateful to have found this dance school for my daughter. The administration and staff at ADT, (Ruth, Janis, and Russell, respectively), have been so friendly and welcoming from the beginning. My daughter loves it there, (especially her classes with Ms. Kelly, who is phenomenal). Everyone at ADT is fully invested in what they do and it shows. They genuinely care about the students and have clearly forged a bond with them and their parents. Students there are engaged and obviously love being there as it’s like a second home. If you’re looking for a dance school with top-notch, highly experienced and caring teachers for your child, this is the real deal. Highly recommended!
