Ballet Co.Laboratory Introduce
In the vibrant landscape of the Twin Cities performing arts scene, Ballet Co.Laboratory stands out as a unique and innovative performing arts theater and Ballet School. This is a place where the timeless tradition of classical ballet is re-imagined for a modern world, with a progressive and inclusive philosophy. From its leadership, which proudly identifies as LGBTQ+ owned and women-owned, to its commitment to a body-positive culture, Ballet Co.Laboratory is redefining what a ballet studio can be. It is a welcoming artistic home for everyone, from young children taking their first steps to seasoned Adult Dancers and aspiring professionals.
Ballet Co.Laboratory is an absolute gem, as one reviewer noted, because it offers a "progressive, open-minded, body-positive culture but without sacrificing any of the technique or artistry that you expect of a serious classical ballet school." This is a testament to the school's mission to honor the roots of ballet while moving the art form forward. The instructors and artistic director, including Zoé Emilie Henrot, are dedicated to providing excellent Classical Ballet Technique and a wide range of training in other forms like Contemporary Ballet. This balanced approach ensures that dancers receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for a variety of dance styles and performance opportunities.
Beyond the classroom, Ballet Co.Laboratory is known for its beautiful, thoughtful, and whimsical Ballet Productions and Dance Performances. Instead of producing yet another version of "The Nutcracker," for example, the company has created "Nutcracker in Wonderland," a reimagined classic that incorporates a queer love story and aims to eliminate harmful cultural stereotypes. This forward-thinking approach to performance showcases the company's artistry and its commitment to creating relevant, inclusive, and magical experiences for audiences of all ages. The opportunity for students to perform alongside the professional company in these productions is a truly priceless and educational experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We made the switch here from another ballet school in the Twin Cities. Ballet Co. Lab is an absolute gem of a ballet school. They offer a progressive, open-minded, body-positive culture but without sacrificing any of the technique or artistry that you expect of a serious classical ballet school. Performances are beautiful, thoughtful, and whimsical, and they offer classes for Pre-K through adults. Can't say enough good things!
June 09 · Clarissa ShafferSigning up for Adult Ballet Fundamentals 1 for my 34th birthday was the best experiences to gift myself! The teaching artists are well versed in proper technique, the corrections I have been given in class improved my overall posture and understanding of movement in my body.Im happy to have a positive, encouraging and diverse community to be part of. Looking forward to my next drop-in classes at BCL plus Adult Ballet Fundamentals 2 spring session! 🩰💃🏽🥳
January 22 · Danielle JimenezMy daughter was a trainee here last year. I wanted to love this program for her, but it was actually bad for her and now she's totally quit dance. It was just too hard to have a job and dance here (how do others pay for it?), and it seemed like the director and the other trainees who had gone to the studio didn't really want or need anyone who they didn't already know. It's probably a great program for girls who went to this studio before. The good parts are that I think there is quality instruction, and I appreciate that they accept bigger girls here because she felt too large to fit in at other pre-professional programs. Also, some of the company members seem older, which is nice.
December 06 · Damien FredericksMost creative choreography and performances in the Twin Cities! The company and school offer a diverse community of supportive artists and instruction in traditional ballet as well as modern dancing styles. Performance opportunities for students are plentiful. This creative environment is LGBTQ+ friendly.
September 09 · DanielleI have been dancing with BCL for five years as an adult learner and continue to just adore the studio. I have had the joy of participating in weekend and weekly summer workshops learning classical choreography, the fundamentals course (starting again after a sad 1.5 year hiatus), many beginning classes with the amazing Genevieve, gentle adult ballet, and intermediate classes with Rosa! Every teacher brings something special to the table. The atmosphere is always supportive. It can be intimidating and vulnerable to try a new hobby as an adult, and it could easily feel like you look 'stupid.' Those teaching at BCL do so in such a way that it is about learning and growing, not how good you look trying an activity for the first time.I could go on and on about how highly I think of BCL in many other ways too, but I will sum up with: wonderful instructors and staff, absolutely welcoming, great teaching, cool studio space, and fantastic performances put on throughout the year! They just put on Midsummer Night's Dream and it was just evocative and beautiful.
