Gillman's Dance Academy Introduce
Gillman's Dance Academy, located in the charming community of Crestwood, Kentucky, has long been a fixture in the local arts scene. Known for its dedication to dance education, the academy strives to provide challenging programs that foster a love of dance in every student, from the youngest beginner to the most serious and advanced dancer. For many years, the studio has been recognized for its role in producing the popular "Nutcracker in a Nutshell" performance, a cherished local tradition that showcases the talent of its students. The academy’s reputation is built on its commitment to providing a foundational dance education, particularly in classical ballet, which is a cornerstone of its curriculum. The goal is to not only teach dance steps but to also instill a sense of discipline, confidence, and artistry that can benefit students throughout their lives.
The studio's reputation for quality instruction is reflected in the positive experiences of many families. As one parent noted, their daughter had the "best experience and growth in confidence" since beginning at the academy. They praised the staff, including owner Denise Gillman, for being "professional and great with communication." The teachers are described as "wonderful role models" who teach in a way that is "just right for their age," which highlights a focus on age-appropriate and effective pedagogy. For many, the studio provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive, develop their skills, and truly enjoy the art of dance. This positive atmosphere is what has made Gillman's a go-to choice for so many families in Oldham County and the surrounding areas.
However, recent feedback has introduced a more complex perspective on the studio's evolution. A long-time customer expressed concerns about a perceived shift in focus toward competitive travel groups, which they felt led to "favoritism" and a decline in the quality of the non-competitive programs and annual performances. This customer noted that a recent "Nutcracker" performance "was a mess" and that the subsequent spring show was "not up to standards." They also expressed disappointment with the lack of communication from the owner when they brought their concerns to the studio. This type of feedback suggests that while the studio continues to excel for some, others feel that it may have "lost its way" and that the experience can be different depending on a student's commitment level and whether they are part of a competitive group. This is an important consideration for prospective families deciding if the academy's culture is the right fit for them.

The features and highlights of Gillman's Dance Academy are a mix of its well-established strengths and its current challenges, as seen through customer reviews. On the positive side, the studio is known for its professional and communicative owner, Denise Gillman, and for having teachers who are excellent role models. The focus on building confidence in students is a major draw for parents. The studio's commitment to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance, is also a notable feature. The acceptance of credit and debit cards makes it convenient for parents. However, a significant highlight of the studio in the past, its production of "Nutcracker in a Nutshell," has recently been the subject of some critical feedback, with one parent claiming a decline in its quality. Another key point of public feedback is the perception of favoritism towards competitive dancers, which is a significant factor for families to consider when evaluating the studio.

What is worth choosing about Gillman's Dance Academy is a multifaceted question. For families seeking a dance school that has a proven track record of instilling confidence and a love for dance in young students, the positive reviews offer a compelling argument. The studio’s commitment to foundational dance education, particularly classical ballet, provides a strong basis for aspiring dancers. The accessibility of the facility is also a major plus, making it a welcoming place for everyone. However, it is also important for prospective families to consider the more critical feedback regarding the studio's evolution. The concerns about a perceived shift in focus and a decline in production quality are significant points of consideration. A parent who believes in the principle that "hard work and production yields success" and wishes to see consistent, high-quality results for all students might find the recent public comments to be a reason to explore other options. On the other hand, for a family with a competitive dancer who is willing to make a financial commitment and "play the game," as one review put it, the studio might be a perfect fit. The decision to choose Gillman's Dance Academy ultimately depends on a family's individual goals, values, and expectations, as the public data suggests a complex and evolving dynamic within the academy.

Gillman's Dance Academy Reviews
My daughter has had the best experience and growth in confidence since beginning at Gillman’s. Denise is very professional and great with communication. My daughter loved her teacher! She was a wonderful role model, and she taught the class in a way that was just right for their age. My daughter was even crying this evening because she was sad that this season has ended. Thank you to Denise and her staff! :)
May 01 · Kelsey McWilliamsWe took our daughter to Gillman's because it had a great reputation and produced Nutcracker in a nutshell, a great performance. She was there for about 5 years where she excelled until last month, the last couple years they began to form competition travel groups and it became obvious that those dancers were given favoritism. The last production of Nutcracker was a mess, the music went out for long period, was not smooth and flawless like in the past. The last Spring performance was not up to standards as well. I think the business has lost its way with who they have instructing, managing, and making day to day decisions. Upon informing them of our concerns not 1 phone call from owner addressing. If teaching your children hard work and production yields success, then you should look elsewhere. Or, if you play the game and spend the cash, then Gillman's may be the place for you.
September 12 · Wes BThe staff is amazing and truly love the dancers. From the teeny tiny dancers that melt your heart to the beautiful grace of the senior dancers it has been a wonderful experience for my daughter. Whether you're looking for a fun class or to get on the professional track for a dance career Gillmans is a great choice.
February 02 · Shelly richMy daughter was in a 6:30 Lyrical 3/4 class at Gilman’s for 2 years. This year she was assigned to a 5:30 Lyrical 3/4 class (apparently I chose the wrong class when enrolling). I notified Golman’s that my daughter wanted to be in the 6:30 Lyrical 5 class. The owner said she did not think my daughter was ready for Lyrical 5, but that she would observe her. I left work early for her to attend the first three classes, but did not hear back from the owner. I cannot take off work all the time to make this earlier class that my daughter does not want. I notified Gilman’s that we would not be continuing. They continue to bill me and are requiring me to pay for the full year. I don’t think most businesses would demand full payment under these circumstances.
April 08 · Mark WeaverThe owner is very professional. She places children in classes appropriate for their skill level for their health and safety. Placement is not determined by age.And her policies and procedures are very clearly stated. And you aren't able to register for classes without stating you have read and understand her policies. That includes no refunds, to those of you that are whining about being billed after you chose to quit. As a matter of fact, when one of my children was 3, she had behavioral issues and was dismissed from the school. I continued to pay because I signed a contract. Just like everyone else. My daughter was taught that taking dance was a privilege, not a right.
