José Mateo Ballet Theatre Introduce
Located in the historic and academic heart of Harvard Square, José Mateo Ballet Theatre is a unique institution that combines a professional ballet company with a distinguished school. Housed within a beautiful stone church, the studio offers a setting that is both inspiring and serene. The school stands out for its bold mission to challenge the traditions of elitism and exclusion that have long been associated with classical ballet. Instead, José Mateo Ballet Theatre is committed to providing a more inclusive, humanistic, and expert approach to ballet training, making the art form accessible to everyone in the Cambridge and Greater Boston communities.
For over three decades, the organization has been a cornerstone of the arts in New England, known for its innovative programming, artistic excellence, and extensive community outreach. The school provides a welcoming and progressive environment for young dancers, from the "Young Dancers Program" for children ages 3-18, to a variety of classes for adults. Students benefit from the studio's small class sizes, which ensure personalized instruction and mentoring from a dedicated and experienced professional faculty. This tailored approach allows dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels to progress and grow beyond their expectations, whether they are just starting out or aspiring to a professional career.
One of the most remarkable aspects of José Mateo Ballet Theatre is its integration of dance with broader community engagement. Through initiatives like the annual Dance for World Community festival, the organization harnesses the power of dance to build bridges and bring people together. This event, which features a wide array of international dance styles and performances, reflects the studio's commitment to social responsibility and its belief in dance as a tool for positive change. The studio also provides a venue for other artists and civic groups, further solidifying its role as a central hub for arts and culture in the community.
While the school is highly regarded for its beautiful setting, live piano accompaniment, and the high quality of its instruction, it is also important for prospective students and parents to be aware of the full experience. Some reviews point to concerns regarding the organizational culture and the attitude of certain staff members. However, the studio also offers a variety of free introductory and trial classes, providing an excellent opportunity for new students and parents to experience the environment firsthand before committing to a full program. The studio's commitment to creating a welcoming space for all, including its focus on making ballet accessible to adults and youth who are new to the art form, remains a strong and appealing aspect of its mission.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Think ballet bars, Church setting, Echoes of beautiful music played by the prestige piano artist is what made this school standout.Pros - I gotta say, ms Elizabeth the teachers and the piano player is phenomenal. I love that it’s in a rich setting. A church used as a ballet school, located 1 block from Harvard University Campus. What more can you ask? Inside a beautiful stone chapel with armored shield shaped stained-glass windows in large open space with a lofted upper level that leads to smaller studios where parents can watch their children practice.Cons - a reputable school definitely comes with its cons. It had hit me consistently with 3 connections there that displayed a dark corrupted energy. The first day I was there, I was invited to interact with the janitor Whom was disrespectful to me when I ask him where is the way into the school. forgot what he said but it was in a egotistical tone like “don’t you know your place?” All I remember was a put down but I let him know, he does not have access to disrespect me. Later on, I started to really have doubts to bring my child there when Jose Mateo himself judged my child who’s on the spectrum. Bc he’s the owner of the school I always saw him in a particular higher light. It’s crazy that a lot of owners of great institutions are ran by egotistics. that light quickly dimmed. it came to my attention while he was talking to another parent/ individual, about students who will “NEVER” get to the top and it is a waste of everyone’s time. Knowing this truth made me cry as me and my child worked really hard to get resource and opportunities there. In my own experience I got approached by several other people who works there showing their dark side. Isabel, the marketing manager whom was particularly snobbish. On several occasions I felt deliberately put people down by her whenever I ask for help. It makes me turn the other way whenever I see her coming. on top of being unhelpful, she put herself in power, using control to get her way. Another thing is The position of the ‘head of overall office manager’ is always open and changing, 3 people over the 2 year term since my child took classes there.Misc:For young beginners, parents get to see their practice in parent observation week. There are adults whose not ballet dancers taking classes too for body structuring and posturing. When my child takes his class, I whip out my sketchbook and draw the dancers while they practice. The beautiful music they put on is calming and inspiring to me, and the view from upper level is a perfect view through glass panels. If it wasn’t for some snobbish experience there I’d look forward to my son's ballet classes every week as it gives me an excuse to visit beautiful Harvard square for brunch on a weekly basis.
June 07 · Mon LiuWonderful ballet school for children and adults, with additional offerings of other dance classes corresponding to diverse cultures. Also, organizers of the annual Dance for World Community event, highlighting international dance styles through performances and classes open to the public.
April 03 · Claudia DonnetThe beginner sessions at this studio are definitely a higher caliber than at other studios I’ve been to. My instructor could be quite rude, but there was a lot of focus on proper technique. Classes definitely had more of a serious and intense atmosphere, focused on being a better dancer rather than a casual after-work activity. As for downsides, the studio is in an old church and is unbearably hot in the summer. So hot that you drip sweat and it’s hard to think sometimes. They also rescheduled one of the classes to be on a Friday when the initial schedule was Tues/Thurs. I asked for a refund for the one class because another student was able to get one, but was told I could not have a refund. When I pushed, insisting Fridays conflict with my schedules, they offered a class credit, which wouldn’t work as I am leaving the city. While I’m sure the quality of teaching is respectable, they need to work on organizational issues and fixing inconsistent policies. Every time I have a question or request, it seems impossible to get an answer.
August 14 · Andie VBeautiful! Big gorgeous building with spacious wonderful classrooms of various sizes. It's not not new construction & high tech equipment, but rather big open, airy rooms in an old historic building with hardwood floors, barres, and mirrors. Absolutely wonderful. The bathrooms are great! Instead of 1 big bathroom with several stalls for each gender, they have individual unisex bathrooms that are spacious enough to get changed before or after class, I loved that! And the ballerina statue out front is one of my favorite statues!
April 24 · Jenna SunshineI have immensely enjoyed the adult open classes I have taken at JMBT over this past year – The teachers are all very attentive, the classes are appropriately challenging, and it is extremely helpful that they offer both morning and evening class times. The environment is friendly, helpful, and extremely welcoming; it is an overwhelmingly positive community. I was able to attend their Nutcracker, which had a refreshing new take on the ballet. I've attended their other performances throughout the year which are done cabaret style in their own beautiful theatre; I adore the space, the choreography, and the music. I even took a non-dancer date to a show, and they really enjoyed it!This is an exceptional place, and it is definitely worth checking out!
