The Louisville Ballet has put on some fantastic performances. I have enjoyed “The Nutcracker” and “Romeo & Juliet.” The dancers are wonderful, and they are truly spectacular to watch. What the Louisville Ballet has produced from what I have seen, has been terrific. However, the top leadership of the Louisville Ballet leaves much to be desired. They are not very accommodating for neurodivergent or queer employees, and in spite of the wonderful experiences I have had watching their performances, I cannot in good conscience support Louisville Ballet by attending any more of their performances or recommend anyone go to their performances until there has been marked change in their leadership and how it treats employees. I also recommend against anyone who would donate their money to the Ballet for this reason, as well. There are other organizations in Louisville who produce wonderful art of all kinds who are also friendly and inclusive to all.I reiterate, I do not recommend the Louisville Ballet or supporting it in any way. - Jonathan Wahl

Louisville Ballet Introduce

The Louisville Ballet holds a distinguished place in Kentucky's artistic landscape, proudly serving as the official ballet company of the Commonwealth. For decades, it has been a cultural cornerstone, captivating audiences with its spectacular performances of classic ballets and innovative new works. Patrons often describe the dancers as "wonderful" and "truly spectacular," praising the company for its ability to produce "terrific" and "fantastic" shows. The artistry on stage is undeniable, and productions like "The Nutcracker" and "Romeo & Juliet" are particularly lauded for their beauty and emotional depth. Beyond the stage, the Louisville Ballet is committed to community engagement, providing a variety of educational programs and outreach initiatives to schools and residents across the region. Their mission is to inspire, engage, and educate the community through the moving art of dance, and in many respects, they have successfully brought this mission to life for countless audience members.

However, recent public reviews have brought to light a different perspective, one that speaks to the internal culture and management of the organization. While the on-stage performances receive high praise, the experiences of some former employees and adult students have raised serious concerns. Reviews describe the top leadership as "not very accommodating for neurodivergent or queer employees," and a recent adult student cited an experience with an instructor that they found to be "way too aggressive" and "uncomfortable." This feedback suggests a significant contrast between the public-facing artistry and the internal working environment, a disconnect that has led some former supporters to "not recommend the Louisville Ballet or supporting it in any way" until a "marked change in their leadership" is evident. This nuanced public feedback is important for potential patrons and students to consider as they make decisions about where to spend their time and money in Louisville's rich arts community.

Choosing to engage with the Louisville Ballet requires a careful consideration of both its celebrated artistic contributions and the public feedback regarding its internal culture. What is worth choosing about the company is, without question, the quality of its on-stage performances. Audiences consistently enjoy the talent and dedication of the dancers, and productions like "The Nutcracker" are cherished traditions for many Kentucky families. However, prospective students and patrons should also be aware of the public concerns raised about the organization's leadership and the environment it fosters for some of its employees and students. The public reviews, which are part of the available data, serve as a significant caveat, suggesting that while the art itself is spectacular, the company's internal culture may not align with everyone's values of inclusivity and respect. For those who prioritize supporting organizations that align with these values, the public comments about the Louisville Ballet's treatment of its employees and students present a serious point of consideration. The ultimate decision to support the Louisville Ballet rests on a personal evaluation of these two opposing perspectives: the undeniable artistic excellence on one hand, and the reported lack of a supportive and inclusive environment on the other.
