Founded and run by owners Miss Ashley and Miss Alex, the school is fully devoted to providing dancers of all ages with an encouraging environment where they are given the opportunity to grow and excel in their dance education. The philosophy of NJSDA is to maintain a phenomenal balance between having the high standards of an excellent dance school while still being caring and kind. This dual focus ensures that students are not only challenged to reach their full potential but are also nurtured and supported throughout their artistic journey.
NJSDA is a place where every dancer, from the youngest beginner to the most dedicated advanced student, can thrive. The school prides itself on being "very different from the stereotypical 'dance mom' type of dance school," fostering an environment where dancers genuinely support each other. This positive and respectful atmosphere is a direct reflection of the owners and instructors, who are described as "top tier professionals with the same challenging standards and caring demeanor." As a result, students show utmost respect for their teachers and want to make them proud. The sense of community and mutual respect is a core part of the NJSDA experience, creating a place where families feel at home and dancers build lasting friendships.
The quality of instruction at NJSDA is widely praised and is considered "worth every penny" by many of its patrons. The curriculum is committed to sound principles in dance education, integrating elements from both progressive and classical training. The school’s dedication to correct training has led to many of its students achieving professional careers in dance, with contracts at national ballet companies and on Broadway. However, the school is just as proud of its students who have gone on to become successful professionals in other fields, demonstrating the holistic nature of the training. With a 4,000-square-foot facility featuring three spacious studios, two of which have sprung marley floors, NJSDA provides a professional and well-equipped space for dancers to train.

What is worth choosing
The North Jersey School of Dance Arts is an exceptional choice for dance education in Hackettstown and the surrounding areas, largely due to its unique and well-executed teaching philosophy. The first and most compelling reason to choose this school is the leadership provided by owners Miss Ashley and Miss Alex. A glowing review from a long-term client perfectly captures this, noting the "phenomenal balance between having the high standards of an excellent dance school while still being caring/kind." This balance is critical, as it allows students to push their boundaries and work hard without the pressure of a hyper-competitive, unhealthy environment. The fact that dancers "adore them, show them utmost respect, and want to make them proud" speaks volumes about the positive culture they have cultivated.
Furthermore, the quality of instruction is a significant differentiator. The studio's commitment to delivering the highest quality of dance training is evident in the success of its students, many of whom have gone on to achieve professional success. This is not just a recreational studio; it is a place for serious dancers who are "willing to work hard" and aspire to "compete with the best of the best." The focus on sound principles and a genuine atmosphere sets it apart. While some dance schools may focus on flashy routines, NJSDA is committed to building a strong technical foundation that serves students whether they pursue dance professionally or apply the discipline and skills to other life endeavors.
The atmosphere is another key reason to choose NJSDA. The families and dancers are described as supportive, creating a true community where everyone feels welcome. This stands in stark contrast to the "stereotypical 'dance mom' culture," making it a refreshing and positive place for a child to spend their time. The studio's commitment to an "honest running, genuine and true atmosphere" ensures that the experience is authentic and focused on the well-being and growth of the students. While one review points to a potential mismatch for very young children and a specific teaching style, the school’s response that "our teaching style maybe not a right fit" demonstrates a commitment to transparency and finding the right fit for every family. For a parent seeking a studio that combines top-tier professional instruction with a supportive, community-focused environment and a genuine commitment to their child's holistic development, NJSDA is undoubtedly a worthwhile choice.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1NJSDA is everything I could ask for in a dance school for my daughters. Miss Ashley and Miss Alex (the owners) are simply the best, maintaining a phenomenal balance between having the high standards of an excellent dance school while still being caring/kind. All of their dancers adore them, show them utmost respect, and want to make them proud. The other instructors at the school are also top tier professionals with the same challenging standards and caring demeanor. This attitude is reflected by the dancers, who support each other. The families are great. NJSDA is very different from the stereotypical “dance mom” type of dance school. On top of that, I couldn’t be happier with the quality of their instruction… it is worth every penny. If your dancer is willing to work hard, this school will prepare them to compete with the best of the best.
September 17 · Kelly LaVerdeDid try out class with my 2.5 year old daughter. They don’t let parents in class, but they did an exception for me due to our first time there. They expected me to have not only ballet shoes for try out but also tap shoes which of cos we didn’t have, they tried to find some shoes in their storage for my daughter but doesn’t have right size so they allowed her to be in her ballet shoes for tap part of class. Teacher doesn’t care a bit about new student and tried to explained 2.5 year old child who never did ballet how to do plie by words “bend your legs in diamond shape”, I as a former dancer was forced to actually put my daughter’s legs in the right position once and she picked up right the way. Teacher doesn’t pay attention how kids do exercises right or wrong and it was only 5 kids including my daughter. They sent me follow up email after the class where I explained all of this as a reason not to sign up and they replied “our teaching style maybe not a right fit” and “we practicing games and playful activities” which was zero games and zero playful activities only freeze dance in the end of class. Almost forgot that 2.5-3 year old kids should switch their shoes from ballet to tap in the middle of class which takes good amount of time also.I am very disappointed about this school and won’t recommend at least ballet classes for 2.5-3 year old kids.
June 16 · Julia PAnyone who is looking for talented, highly educated and extremely kind teachers for your child to learn from, NJSDA is the place for you! We switched to this school 2 years ago and couldn’t be happier we did. Ashley and Alex truly care about each student in their school. They have a passion for dance and it shows. The “recital” at the end of the year is more like attending a Broadway musical. The dancers all work together to ensure everyone shines throughout the production. Thank you NJSDA for helping our tiny dancer shine bright!
September 25 · Kelly PezzaniteMy daughter has been attending NJSDA for 3 years and we couldn’t love the school more. The teachers are highly trained professionals who take their passion for dance seriously. I am confident my daughter is learning from the best of the best! They also make it fun and enjoyable which has made my daughter fall in love with dance over the years! Ballet, tap, musical theater and hip hop are our favorite classes. The owners are easy to work with and always answer my emails in a timely manner. Also, the studio looks amazing with its most recent updates! We love NJSDA!
September 16 · Desiree ToroWe love NJSDA! My daughter started right before she turned 5 and we have had such a wonderful experience. The owners are incredibly kind and very professional - they put their blood/sweat/tears into the children and teaching them the technical side of dancing. The end of the season performance is top notch quality. I HIGHLY recommend this studio if you are looking for a place for your dancer to grow!
