The Dance Collective Introduce
For families in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont, finding a dance studio that offers both a high level of training and a nurturing community can feel like a rare find. The Dance Collective, located in West Lebanon, has established itself as a premier destination for dance education, offering an environment that is praised for its ability to intentionally create community among its students. As one long-time dance parent with experience in three different states, including the New York City area, confidently stated, this is "by far the best studio any of my kids have had the privilege of dancing at." This sentiment speaks volumes about the quality of the training and the special atmosphere that the studio has cultivated.
The core of The Dance Collective's mission is to provide an exceptional dance education while fostering a supportive and collaborative community. This is evident in the strong bonds between the dancers, where older students take on the role of mentors for the younger ones, creating a tight-knit family that extends beyond the studio walls. The commitment to a positive environment is a key factor in the studio's success, with many families highlighting the camaraderie and encouragement that permeate every aspect of the studio's culture. While the studio has received glowing reviews for its older students' programs and the opportunities provided, some customer feedback has pointed out concerns regarding instruction for very young children, suggesting that the teaching approach for toddlers may lack a clear lesson plan and proper pedagogical techniques. This feedback highlights that while the studio excels in certain areas, the experience may vary across different age groups.

The Dance Collective Reviews
I have been a dance mom for 27 years now, in three different states, and this is by far the best studio any of my kids have had the privilege of dancing at. (The others were in the NYC area and in the Seacoast, which are much more populated — so this is saying something!) The Studio Director does an amazing job of intentionally creating community among the dancers. The older ones mentor the younger ones, and the older dancers are so tight-knit that they'll spend the time to travel to NYC for a weekend just to support each other at auditions. The training and opportunities for the kids starting at about age 7 are unparalleled — they have access to privates and small size masterclasses with soooo many top-notch Broadway dancers (Rachelle Rak, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Thayne Jasperson, Jakob Karr, etc., etc.) who are friends of the Director and come all the way up to the Upper Valley (!) to visit. But don't take my word for it — go watch the end of the year showcase and then compare it with other studios; you'll see!
November 02 · Heidi LockwoodEnrolling my 4-year-old child in a class here was a big mistake. The teenagers who "taught" the class were friendly and seemed to be good dancers, but they seemed to have no concept of proper pedagogy or child development. It was obvious there was no lesson plan; they were making decisions about what to do next as they went along. A dance step would be shown once and then they would move on to something completely different. There was no repetition or practice of skills, and no progression from simple to more complex. Kids who are still working on learning their left from their right at that age were being asked to perform multi-step dance moves more appropriate for an 8-year-old... and when they inevitably failed, the instructors would tell them what a great job they did. While positive reinforcement can play a role in education, constantly telling students they are successfully doing something when they are not actually hinders the learning process. We tried to stick with this class to the end, but my child (who loved dancing before starting the class) was not enjoying it and seemed to be losing interest in dance, so we made the decision to quit and seek dance instruction elsewhere.
