Under The Bridge Introduce
In the scenic river city of Winona, Minnesota, a remarkable community has taken root—right under the city’s famous bridge. Under The Bridge is not a traditional dance studio with a permanent building; it is a movement, a non-profit organization dedicated to making the power of dance accessible to "everyBODY." What started as a small, informal gathering of friends looking for a way to connect and move during a time of isolation has blossomed into the largest 18+ dance class in Winona. The core of this initiative is a belief that movement is a powerful tool for improving mental health and fostering a sense of community. The atmosphere is consistently described by participants as a "big party," a "safe space," and a "wonderful community of dancers from every shape, size, and age." This unique approach to dance education, which emphasizes fun, inclusivity, and camaraderie over strict technique or competition, is what makes Under The Bridge a true gem in the Minnesota recreational scene.
The story of Under The Bridge is deeply rooted in the local landscape and the vision of its founder, Kat Dworschak. Initially, the classes were hosted outdoors under the well-known Winona bridge, using the scenic backdrop of the Mississippi River and the newly repaved levee. This setting was not just a matter of convenience; it was a deliberate choice to create an open and welcoming space where anyone could join in, free from the intimidation of a formal studio setting. While the classes are now held at a different location, the founding philosophy remains the same: to provide a high-energy, positive environment for people of all backgrounds and abilities. The fact that the classes are donation-based is a cornerstone of their mission to keep dance accessible to all. This model allows people to participate without a financial barrier, ensuring that the community remains diverse and open to anyone who wants to express themselves through movement.
The genuine warmth and support from the instructors and fellow dancers are the features that most people rave about. As a review notes, the instructor is "super fun and makes you feel confident in what you’re doing." The "no experience needed" policy means that a complete beginner can show up and, within a short time, feel comfortable and excited to learn. This welcoming spirit is what transforms a simple dance class into a meaningful community event, where friendships are formed and self-confidence is built. It is this unique blend of professional instruction and heartfelt community-building that makes Under The Bridge a truly special and valuable part of the Winona landscape.
