★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My experience at CBA was incredible. I’ve attended a few different studios, loved them all, but CBA is the best for those looking for more of the classical art of ballet, rather than just a fun workout. Although it is a fun workout too! I attended the adult ballet basics and beginner classes, and the teacher was amazing. The pace of the class was perfect, the teacher was amazing with pointers and helping you adjust form in a friendly way. I felt like the passion from the teacher was inspiring. My love of ballet felt so collective in that environment. Needless to say, I recommend this studio!!
June 15 · Liz HAdult Basic Ballet Class: I appreciate the detailed attention to the basic ballet techniques in the use of the feet, port de bras, body positions. Since classes are kept to a manageable size, the dancer is given individual critiques. Each class is well planned and focuses on details of particular movements. As a result, the dancer gains better insight and understanding. Other basic classes I have taken tend to touch on the full ballet class catalogue giving the dancer a summary version. In this basic class, it is attention to classical ballet details. The teacher is patient, gives fun metaphors to remember, and provides a positive safe environment.
May 09 · Elizabeth PetruskyI have been to the adult ballet class at CBA for 3.5 years and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It has been about 40 years since I took ballet, and now I am taking 3-4 classes a week. People come to adult ballet in different forms and prior experiences, and the key for retention is a non-threatening and non-judgmental environment. When I started taking the class at CBA, there were only Adv Beg/Int classes, and I jumped right in. I had no idea what I was doing; where should I put my arms; how did I hold my posture correctly. I started by imitating. The teacher Melanie was very patient with me and us. She made sure that we were comfortable in the class first then gradually helped me (I didn't even want to use the word "correct" before that could send a negative vibe) achieve the right posture, turnout, or pirouettes that wouldn't injure myself/ourselves. Overtime, the class size grew and there were more demands for more more more classes. Then basic and beginner classes started. Even though I started to get a grip of Advanced Beg/Inter level, I would take these classes whenever I can (I mean I cannot live at the dance studio for 5 days! ) because I would like to focus more on details. The pace of these two classes were slower than my regular ones (Tu, Thr, Sat), but I often sweated myself and gained different "aha" moments each time. Now I am doing Pointe (very first time in my life), Summer Intensive, Variations, and Winter ensemble. I cannot have enough of adult ballet at CBA. When I traveled to different countries, I would try different dance studios. Everyone has their style, and CBA has a unique ours. Come join us and have fun dancing!
May 09 · Shyanmei WangI have been attending the adult class series here, and I have mixed feelings.Pro: close to Northwestern campus with student discountCons: I only attended the beginning & basic class. The class size is very large (10+ people) and the teacher cannot provide any sort of personalized correction of your pose. I noticed a lot of beginning adults doing basic techniques totally wrong, and it could be very dangerous going forward and hard to correct them once you formed a body memory. A good studio should make sure everyone at least on the same page in terms of the techniques, and not just directly jumping into fancy movements off the bar. I have been attending other adult class at various studios, and this studio is definitely the weakest in terms of this. So I'd recommend anyone who wants to seriously practice go somewhere else - build up your techniques with a smaller class size or teacher cares about your pose); but if you have good foundations from childhood and already had all techniques built up, this could work for you.
February 27 · Zincy WeiOur daughter studied at Chicago Ballet Arts from the age of 5 until she graduated high school. She received professional level training and went on to get her degree in dance. CBA prepared her very well for the college auditions, and she had her choice of college acceptances. The teachers are wonderful and they offer top-notch classes. Every ballet class she took had an piano accompanist, and that is a rare added benefit. It's exciting to see the school branching out offering additional styles of dance and training. I highly recommend Chicago Ballet Arts for anyone looking for great training and a great space in which to dance!
