Choosing the right dance school is a personal decision, and for those in Michigan, Downey Dance Instruction offers a compelling case for why it is the best choice. A key factor is the success of their teaching methodology, particularly the private lesson format. As one customer from Battle Creek shared, they were "incredibly happy" with their decision to choose private lessons over a group setting. In just one hour, they learned the basics of both ballroom and swing dancing, including numerous styles of turns. The ability of instructor Jill to teach with clarity and ease, putting herself in both the lead and follow positions, is a testament to the high quality of instruction. The customer's decision to return the following week speaks volumes about the immediate and tangible results they experienced.
Furthermore, the testimonials highlight the long-term impact of the school. A student who has worked with Downey Dance for "almost 15 years" credits them with transforming them from a "reluctant to enthusiastic dancer." This long-term relationship is a powerful endorsement of the school's ability to not only teach steps but also to instill a lifelong passion for dance. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had been wanting to take ballroom and swing lessons for ever now. We are from Battle Creek and I hadn't seen any lessons available over there so I started looking in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. There were some group lessons I was interested in in GR but couldn't find them again when I went to look. I just so happened to come across Downey Dance Construction and texted Jill. She was incredibly responsive. I had told her we were interested in doing lessons as soon as possible, but also were only available on weekends due to my partners job. She literally got us in that day, during the time slot we suggested, and it couldn't have been more perfect! Jill was our instructor and she is very good at her job! It was incredibly easy to take direction from her. She puts herself in both positions and walks you through it. We learned how he leads me onto the floor and then back into him, how to move back and forth, numerous styles of turns for both men and women. We also learned basics of swing dancing including turns. This was all in one hour! I am soooo happy we went this route as opposed to a group lesson! In fact, we're going back next week!
February 16 · Jessica LacosseI've been working with Downey Dance for almost 15 years. Their focus on ease, connection and technique has helped me go from reluctant to enthusiastic dancer. With them, I've been able to gain some proficiency in all the common ballroom dances (waltz, fox, rumba, east- & west- coast swing, etc). You get clear, excellent instruction while having fun receiving it. Which is really the best part, right? It's my suggestion to you: if you want to learn to dance give the Downeys a try.
February 07 · Peter Van MeterMy wife and I have been with Jill and Art Downey for over eight years. They are always so positive and oh so patient with me the man with two left feet. They even did a dance lesson at our wedding reception. Jill and Art also taught dance to my high school students in an after school program. They enjoy all types of dance and always keep it interesting.
August 19 · sharon VoegeMy wife and I took dance lessons from Jill for our 1st dance for our wedding six years ago, and loved every minute! She made it fun, and is easy to follow and learn from. It was a great bonding experience leading up to our wedding that brought us a lot of joy! After being married, we started taking group lessons, and loved having a date night that included exercise, fun and laughter. Most classes were salsa, and some included swing, waltz, and others. We recently started going to class again, as we have missed it greatly. We took a private lesson, which is always great getting the most help and instruction. But we are happy a group lesson is an option now too, since we enjoy the social aspect. We've recently taken a couple salsa classes with Jill and Art, and always learn new things.I (Megan) grew up doing ballet (my 1st love), and it's been fun to learn other kinds of dance as a couple.Thank you for being great teachers and people, and providing a healthy way to have fun! We are grateful for you!Megan & Randy
November 30 · Randy HuntWe started lessons with Jill because we were going on a cruise and formal ballroom dance lessons seemed a good idea, so we could have fun and seem competent on the dance floor. We have continued to have lessons because we found the advice and instruction so helpful and we had fun doing it. We had some lessons years ago with another company but we stopped because my husband felt it was always so negative and he didn’t enjoy it, I can wholeheartedly say that Jill is an excellent and sympathetic instructor who always brings out the best in us. When blips happen she works out what the issue was and helps us resolve it. Those ballroom dance lessons certainly helped when we stayed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island as well as the cruises. Two weddings coming up and those skills will be put to good use. My husband never thought he’d be doing the ‘Hustle’ so comfortably AND with some slick moves!
