In Lak'ech Dance Studio Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In Lak'ech Dance Studio, located in the dynamic city of Oakland, is a truly unique and transformative space for the Bay Area dance community. More than just a dance school, it is a dedicated and safe haven for queer, transgender, and allied dancers, providing a space where Afro-Latin dance becomes a tool for healing, celebration, and unapologetic self-expression. The name itself, "In Lak'ech," is a Mayan concept meaning "you are my other me," a philosophy that guides the studio's commitment to community, kindness, and respect. It's a place where everyone is treated with love and is free to be their authentic self.
Founded by professional dancers who are also world champions, In Lak'ech Dance Studio offers top-tier instruction in a variety of Latin dance styles, including Bachata, Salsa, Merengue, and Kizomba. Despite the high level of expertise, the studio maintains an incredibly approachable and judgment-free atmosphere. As one reviewer noted, they were learning from pros "all along," a testament to the fact that the instructors' accolades are secondary to their dedication to teaching and creating a supportive environment. The studio challenges traditional norms, particularly with its emphasis on breaking down gendered dance roles, allowing anyone to lead or follow, which is a breath of fresh air for many dancers in the community.
Beyond its weekly classes, In Lak'ech is a vital community hub, known for hosting special events like the monthly Queer Sabor dance parties and the annual Queer Latin Dance Festival. These events are integral to the studio's mission of increasing visibility and creating a safer space for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals within the broader Latin dance community. The studio is more than a place to learn steps; it is a movement that uses dance as a form of social activism and community building.
Location and Accessibility

While the entrance might be "hard to spot" at first glance, as one reviewer pointed out, the welcoming environment inside more than makes up for it.
A significant practical advantage of this location is the ample and "plenty of free parking out front and in the neighborhood." ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ive always wanted to learn bachata and be able to dance at socials. Someone suggested Inlakech to me, I don't come from a dance background and didn't even know countings 12345678, but decided to give it a try and do their Wednesday drop in classes consistently for couple months, then maestra Jahaira mentioned they have begginer and intermediate series, I joined all the series and now can proudly dance at socials. I only found out months later after joining, the maestras are professional dancers and have won many dance competitions, so I was learning from pros all along. This dance school is really about community too, treating everyone with love, kindness, respect and judgement free zone. Anyone can lead or follow, they teach it all. I also tried their kizomba class and will be doing some drop in salsa classes to change up my foot work. Highly Recommend this dance school👍
September 19 · H HThis is THE SPOT to dance! Salsa, bachata, merengue, their monthly Queer Sabor dance parties -- literally anything they offer, sign up and it's going to be the best time with the most delightful people. And though it might seem like a silly question, you do not have to identify as queer to dance here! It's just a dance space that's very intentional about welcoming all identities, though the majority of folks are BIPOC and queer.I've been dancing at different salsa & bachata spots around the Bay for almost 2 years now and this is the first place I found where lead & follow dance roles aren't assumed to fall along gendered lines, which was such a breath of fresh air after usually being the only femme lead in a room. The maestras are great teachers and great people who have created such a beautiful community, and I can't believe we get to be a part of it. At their classes I've met folks who drive in from literally hours away because this space is that magical. Can't recommend it highly enough. On a practical note: there's plenty of free parking out front and in the neighborhood. At first glance the entrance might be hard to spot, but it's there! One more thing: although sometimes they only offer salsa on2 classes, I still dance on1 at the Queer Sabor parties they host and I've never had a problem finding folks to dance with. Many people can switch between on1/on2, and many can switch between being lead/follow too.
