ODC Dance Commons Introduce
Welcome to ODC Dance Commons, a world-class center for contemporary dance and a beloved institution in San Francisco. ODC, which stands for Oberlin Dance Collective, has been a groundbreaking force in the arts since its founding in 1971. The Dance Commons, which opened in 2005, is the physical home for the ODC/Dance Company, the ODC School, and a variety of community programs. Located in the vibrant Mission District, this facility is a hub of creative energy, offering an unmatched variety of classes for all ages and levels. From absolute beginners to seasoned professionals, everyone is welcome to explore the joy and discipline of dance. The philosophy at ODC is that dance should be a visible, accessible, and joyful part of a larger world, and they work tirelessly to make this a reality. This is a place where you can find a class to suit your every mood and goal, whether it's an intense workout, a deep dive into technique, or simply a fun way to move and connect with others.
The ODC Dance Commons is more than just a dance studio; it's a comprehensive arts ecosystem. It's home to the professional ODC/Dance company, a renowned troupe that performs for over 50,000 people annually. This direct connection to a working dance company provides a truly unique and inspiring environment for students. The ODC School, in partnership with the popular Rhythm & Motion program, offers a staggering schedule of over 200 classes a week. This immense variety is a huge draw, ensuring that there is truly "something for everyone," as one long-time student noted. The quality of instruction is also a major highlight, with a faculty of professional dancers and choreographers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge. This commitment to excellence, combined with a warm and supportive community, has made ODC a "second home" for many and, according to a reviewer who has been to studios in forty countries, "the best dance studio in the world."
The community at ODC is a diverse and inclusive one. As a women-owned organization, it has been a leader in creating a safe and welcoming space for all. The studio is proudly "LGBTQ+ friendly" and a designated "transgender safespace," reflecting its deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. The facilities themselves are designed to be comfortable for everyone, with gender-neutral restrooms and other thoughtful amenities. ODC's dedication to making dance accessible extends to its Arts Access program, which provides subsidized rates for those for whom price is a barrier, including students, teachers, and working artists. This holistic approach, which prioritizes both artistic excellence and community well-being, is what makes ODC Dance Commons an inspiring and essential part of the Bay Area's cultural landscape.
ODC Dance Commons is located at 351 Shotwell St, San Francisco, CA 94110. Its prime location in the vibrant Mission District makes it a convenient and exciting destination. The studio is just a short walk from the 16th Street Mission BART station, offering easy access for those commuting from across San Francisco and the wider Bay Area. For those who prefer to drive, there is limited metered and 2-hour street parking available on nearby streets. There are also several public parking garages within walking distance, such as the one at 16th and Hoff St, providing additional options. ODC has a strong commitment to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and other features that ensure a welcoming environment for all visitors. The Mission District itself is full of life, with a myriad of cafes, restaurants, and shops, making a trip to ODC an experience that can be enjoyed both inside and outside the studio.
The location’s accessibility is a key part of what makes ODC so popular. The ease of getting there via public transit or car eliminates a common barrier to participating in an arts program. The surrounding neighborhood also offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the unique culture of San Francisco's Mission District. This integration with the local community is a benefit to both students and the organization itself. The fantastic facilities, which a reviewer described as "huge" and having a "big dance floor," are an additional perk that enhances the overall experience.

January 19 · Teo Lin-BiancoBeen taking dance classes with rhythm and motion, since late eighties. Best dance studio in the world and i've been to forty countries!! Wonderful inspiring and gentle teachers... Warm supportive community... My second home
February 05 · cattyOMG, this is a place of joy! Seriously! The staff is kind, competent and always so helpful. There are people of all walks of life, need, and experience. There are salsa queens and kings honing their technique. There are hula students riding high on inspiration from their trip to Hawaii. OMG, the Tap teachers are wonderful! Talented, nurturing, funny pedagogy. The contemporary classes are insanely satisfying and have a diversity of style and level, so that everyone can stay in shape or increase their skill. Parkinson classes, sent from Heaven. I'm there mostly for beginner ballet. Chris Lam is one of the best teachers out there! He doesn't miss anything in class, and you walk out feeling completely endorphined out and i increase my dance vocabulary with each class. Erin is so student focused, and is strength and beauty personified. The advanced and Pro class instructors are some of the most respected in the nation. I will never be able to dance that well, but it's a thing of beauty to watch the more advanced instruction.Kids and families abound, in a very safe and secure facility. The teen program in ballet, hip-hop, contemporary is arguably the best in the country! Oh, and Rhythm &Motion class! Each class is a celebration of the soul.I think you can forget the ills of the world in a class at ODC. I know I do!
June 22 · ross UchimuraThe dance classes here are phenomenal. take a class with Tika Morgan - she is a tough teacher but you will learn so much about dance, culture roots and life wisdom.
February 17 · Chenyu ZhengThe beginner salsa class is not really for beginners. The instructor just shows off, overloads and does not pay attention to anything student does. They are in their own world. I understand that I can't learn to dance in one class but I did not pick a single thing to work on. It was a frustrating experience.
