Shawl-Anderson Dance Center Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center (SADC), a cherished institution in Berkeley, California, has been a cornerstone of the East Bay dance community since its founding in 1958 by Frank Shawl and Victor Anderson. Inspired by their New York mentor's belief that dance should be accessible to all, they created a space that has become a "home for dance" for movers of every background. SADC is not merely a place for classes; it's a vibrant, community-driven organization that provides a vital and inclusive space for dance education, artistic development, and performance.
The center’s mission is to build and support a vital and inclusive community for movers of all ages and styles. It caters to a wide spectrum of students, from children taking their first steps in a creative movement class to professional dancers seeking rigorous training and a platform for their work. The studio's commitment to inclusivity is a core part of its identity, as it actively works to create a welcoming environment for all, including the LGBTQ+ community. This ethos, combined with a faculty of exceptional instructors, has cemented SADC's reputation as a local treasure, as noted by a reviewer who chose their home location in part due to the studio's availability.
SADC's programming extends far beyond its regular class schedule. As a non-profit performing arts organization, it provides institutional support for artists, offers a performance and rehearsal venue, and partners with other community-based organizations. This makes it a central hub for the East Bay's creative scene, offering a rich tapestry of dance experiences for both participants and audiences. The studio's dedication to its community, its rich history, and its forward-thinking approach to dance education are what make it a truly special place.
Location and Accessibility
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is located at 2704 Alcatraz Ave, Berkeley, CA 94705, USA. This location places it in a convenient and dynamic part of Berkeley, just a short walk from College Avenue, which is bustling with shops and restaurants. The studio is easily accessible from various parts of the Bay Area, and its proximity to a BART station makes it a viable option for those who use public transportation.
While the studio is housed in an older craftsman building, which gives it a unique charm, it's worth noting that this can present some accessibility challenges, as a customer review mentions stairs and small restrooms. However, SADC is committed to inclusivity, and offers a gender-neutral restroom, and is an LGBTQ+ friendly space. The studio also works with other locations, like the BANDALOOP Studios in Oakland, which has more extensive ADA-accessible features. When attending, it is recommended to inquire about specific class locations to ensure the space meets your needs. For parking, there is a mix of free and paid street parking available in the vicinity, which is typical for a Berkeley location.
The studio's embrace of different learning environments also adds to its accessibility. In addition to in-person classes, SADC offers a comprehensive schedule of online and outdoor classes, ensuring that students can continue their dance training regardless of location or personal comfort levels. This adaptability shows the center’s dedication to serving its community in the most effective way possible.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a great studio! Staff is very friendly, classes are wonderful and it is close to bart. It's in an old craftsman so that does limit accessibility in the way of stairs and small restrooms but over all a wonderful dance school!
May 22 · Evelyn ReneeShawl Anderson is one of those rare dance studios that manages to be community driven, friendly, and provide good classes in a wide variety of dance styles. As a retired dancer, dance is vital to my well being, and i choose the location of my home in part by what dance studio is available to attend. These days, it is hard to find good ballet classes with live accompaniment, but Shawl's has them. As well as modern, belly dancing and other forms. In all honesty, attending class at Shawl's is one of the main things that keeps me in the East Bay! It is a local treasure.
December 11 · Elizabeth Du ValSADC is by far the most welcoming dance studio I have ever been to! I started classes here back in 2016, taking intro to ballet and modern. This past year I've started taking advanced level classes and it has been a joyous experience to learn dance from the ground up! The teachers are incredibly supportive and the students cheer each other on.Another bonus: this place is super queer! Students, teachers, the community as a whole--if you are a queer person looking for a safe place to move your body and soul exactly as they are, dance here!
October 23 · LI enjoy Chris Lam’s wonderful ballet classes, I would have loved to continue taking his class. However, I have recently discovered that SADC posted a statement of solidarity with the Palestinian, while calling for the destruction of Israel. I find it very inappropriate to post a political statement inside a website of a dance company.Any one that cares about Israel should boycott SADS, like I did!
February 28 · Benjamin LevyThis dance studio is my second home, and I would give it 10 stars if I could.Shawl-Anderson has a unique combination of excellent teachers in every style, a completely non-competitive vibe, a supportive community, and a commitment to the credo that Everyone Can Dance. Although it was founded with a focus on modern dance, there are offerings in many dance genres for all ages (you are never too old!) at all skill levels from absolute beginner to professional. All body shapes are welcome. The emphasis is not on looking a certain way but on learning and growing as a mover. I have made so many friends there, as well as getting to explore dance under the guidance of many incredible teachers. SADC does what every dance studio should aspire to do: bring together and support a community of artists, audiences, and students at every stage.
