What is worth choosing?
For anyone in the Ann Arbor area seeking a dance school, The Studio Centre is an exceptional choice for several key reasons. Foremost among them is its commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment. As one parent highlighted, it is a "safe space re: gender expression, race, etc." and is also openly "LGBTQ+ owned." In today’s world, finding a place where everyone, regardless of their background, can feel welcomed and celebrated is invaluable. This dedication to inclusivity creates a truly positive atmosphere where students can focus on learning and growing without fear of judgment. This is not only crucial for emotional well-being but also for fostering the creativity and self-expression that are at the heart of dance.
Another significant reason to choose The Studio Centre is its strong emphasis on technical dance education. As a reviewer noted, the studio is a place where "students are learning technique, practice and discipline." This focus on the fundamentals is what builds strong, confident, and well-rounded dancers. The studio believes that proper technique is the foundation of all dance styles, requiring all dancers to be enrolled in at least one ballet class while taking other styles. This rigorous approach, led by experienced instructors like Mr. Tyler, ensures that students develop beautiful lines and become "quite strong," as a parent observed. This structured learning environment provides a solid framework for students, whether they are pursuing dance as a hobby or with more serious intentions.
Finally, the wide range of classes for all ages and levels makes the studio a versatile choice for the entire family. From a 5th-grade girl to a 10th-grade boy, and from older beginners to young children, everyone can find a program that fits their needs. The availability of everything from Adult Beginner Ballet to Advanced Ballet Class shows a dedication to serving the entire community, not just one specific demographic. This breadth of offerings, combined with the studio's inclusive culture and focus on a high-quality education, makes The Studio Centre an excellent and worthwhile investment for anyone in Michigan looking for a dance home.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We have two kids (5th grade girl and 10th grade boy) in dance atThe Studio Centre and they love it! They are challenged, empowered, and confident thanks to Mr. Tyler and his teaching team. I love that my kids always get in the car with happy and calm spirits after they have spent an evening dancing with good friends, fun music, and kind teachers.
November 07 · Xan MorganMy daughter has been attending this studio for a year +. My daughter comes home with a smile and feels a sense of accomplishment when she's learned something new. She's also really improved; her lines are beautiful and she's gotten quite strong! As a parent, I like that it is a dance education studio, where students are learning technique, practice and discipline. The studio is also an inclusive space re: gender expression, race, etc. My daughter started there around age 7. But this is also a great studio for older beginners as well. I highly recommend this studio for kids/teens of any age who don't want to do sports but need some other kind of exercise/ movement education!
April 19 · LaKisha SimmonsWhen I moved to Ann Arbor from the Bay Area, I didn’t have high hopes about finding good dance training for my pre-teen daughter and classes for myself. But then we found The Studio Center. The owner and main instructor, Tyler Stickel, has managed to not only successfully carry his relatively new studio through the pandemic but has actually been able to expand his space and offerings! There’s good stuff going on there.Tyler is a beautiful dancer himself. He has lots of natural facility, but it’s also clear he comes from a well-rounded dance background with great training. Good dancers don’t always make good teachers, but Tyler is excellent in both arenas. He’s able to effectively parlay his strong training and professional experience into his teaching. Not only does he know what he’s talking about, he’s able to articulate concepts in a way that’s accessible to students just starting out in dance as well as to those who have been training for many years.I’ve been a regular in the adult intermediate ballet class for over a year now. As a 40-something former bunhead coming back to ballet after a long hiatus, Tyler and The Studio Centre has been a godsend! I don’t remember feeling this good in ballet in decades, and I’m actually continuing to learn as I adjust to my more mature body. The classes are intimate enough to receive personalized attention and foster camaraderie, but there’s enough of a critical mass to make it fun. Tyler always has fresh combinations (which he has meticulously and thoughtfully prepared before each class), and he offers modifications to be more or less challenging. He creates a class that is full of positive vibes - no judgment, just the tacit understanding that we’re all there to have a good time and enjoy our own relationship to the art form. His wonderful balance of good humor and peppy energy never fails to put a smile on my face.I’ve been thrilled that Tyler’s been able to add more styles of adult dance classes this year. Stephanie Harvey, who teaches contemporary as well as works for the youngest students at the studio, is lovely. Her approach is grounded in real modern/contemporary technique, and her sweetly supportive demeanor is a pleasure. She’s very easy to connect to as an adult student, and I can see how she’d also be beloved by the littles. I haven’t had the opportunity to take many classes from Kali, the new hip hop teacher, but from what I’ve experienced, she’s excellent as well. That class is still growing and is aimed at the beginner level, but Kali has an encouragingly energetic personality and builds the class effectively. My daughter has also been a student at the studio in ballet, jazz, contemporary, and acro dance classes. She’s returned to dance (post-COVID and after we’ve struggled to find quality studios), has improved significantly in a short period of time, and (most importantly) is genuinely enjoying herself! Tyler’s instruction and encouragement are the reasons for this. He really seems to SEE her and remains genuinely invested in her progress. Also, the ethos of the studio is HEALTHY and FUN while still being the appropriate level of serious (yay for required uniforms and punctuality!). Tyler demands commitment from the young students (any studio worth its salt should!), and the focus, discipline, work ethic, and commitment he models himself has inspired my daughter. To gain the respect of an opinionated pre-teen is no small feat!As is probably apparent, I’m passionate about dance AND quality dance education. I’m still dancing today because of the great training I was able to receive in wonderful studios growing up. I’ve been looking for that magic again for myself and for my daughter as we’ve moved between both Coasts and now into the Midwest. I would put the instruction and training from Tyler and The Studio Center up against any top local studio in the country. Tyler has created a truly impressive studio and community for dance in his small corner at the outskirts of Ann Arbor. My daughter and I are truly grateful to be a part of it!
November 09 · Soojin LeeWe started with The Studio Centre a year ago and my 5 year old daughter is in love. We enjoy watching her confidence grow the more skills she learns. Very happy with Tyler and all of the teachers.
