★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've been taking classes with Luis for over a year now. I am more than grateful to have such a wonderful teacher, not only that he's my instructor but he has given me confidence in my ability to dance tango!
January 05 · Ivonne PadresMy partner and I started taking classes a year ago. Since then, I feel we've become pretty okay dancers. While that sounds bad, keep in mind that I am not a good dancer... And Argentine Tango is one of the hardest partner dances. And it was my first time taking a dancing class. One of the best things a teacher can do is break down something into its simplest parts so that anyone can understand it. The other thing great teachers do is understand when a student isn't doing something well and offering clear, concise instructions on how to fix it easily. Luis does both of those things. He also organises regular practices and social dances. While my partner and I have yet to go to one (we were very bad at first, then summer happened and we made lots of plans), he regularly insists that practice be done in the social space. We'll probably be going to one in the winter. Hopefully this review convinced you to see us there.
August 19 · Russell PaacUsually when people leave a dance class they feel relief or a sense they’ve accomplished something. HAH.... nope! I actually left feeling so angry and discouraged. I’m a beginner to tango and I don’t really have much background knowledge on it so I went to the “absolute beginners course” I was greeted and told that they’re starting a new series so I happened to show up at the right time. The other dancers came in and then he started going over the basics. Like box step, walk, and rock step. As I mentioned before I’m a beginner, I have never taken a dance class before, so for me to grasp the concept of it is going to take some time, Luis the instructor is actually yelling and getting frustrated at me, so these reviews on him being “patient” is questionable . All the other dancers actually have taken his class before, they’re just brushing up their fundamentals. Instead of going at the rate of the only beginner in the class he decides to go at the rate of the majority which aren’t even beginners! Like come on! Let me take some baby steps before we sprint here. After the lesson I left that classroom feeling so angry and disappointed I never want to go back again, I’m also really mad that I spent $40 on his beginner package and didn’t even really use it.
June 05 · Thomas NguyenA true gem has arrived in Tacoma. A friendly, welcoming community of experienced & beginner dancers who are devoted to art & technique of tango the Argentinian tradition under the patient but firm instruction of Luis Perez, the only teacher here who has jumped all the training hoops to achieve international certification. I started Fall 2013 attending the drop in beginner's classes, the first one was free (... of course). I was made to feel @ home by everyone there. The twice a month "milonga" has treats provided mainly by Luis (but occasionally, some of us have been known to bring flowers & snacks to share as well) to keep our energy up. You need to check the other places in town but the fees & prices are more than reasonable. I chose to go with one of the private lesson packages of 10 sessions which immediately got me comfortable w/dancing w/a partner. I am not necessarily the most coordinated person, I am easily distractable & I have trust issues when it comes to men. Luis is no non-sense, gently getting me to focus on the non-verbal / body language of the lead - all of this with me slightly off balance & in heels. I do a lot of yoga but this is also a great way to get out of you head & focus on aethetic body movement... cheers
August 03 · Connie HayashiLuis is so very patient and helpful. I’m still a neophyte and forget steps from one class to the next but I keep going back. Little by little I note my progress and he is so encouraging. We take other classes too but Luis is the BEST instructor!
