Children's Dance Conservatory / IYB Introduce
For families in the Washington region, particularly on Mercer Island, Children's Dance Conservatory / IYB (Island Youth Ballet) is a name synonymous with excellence in classical ballet education. This institution is more than just a dance school; it is a community dedicated to providing superior dance training and performance opportunities for young, aspiring dancers. With a focus on the fundamentals of classical ballet, the conservatory offers a structured curriculum that not only teaches the art form but also instills invaluable life lessons. As one parent beautifully put it, their daughter has learned "the life lessons of hard work, discipline, poise and stage presence," in addition to ballet technique. The studio’s commitment to fostering a nurturing environment is evident in the friendships built and the confidence gained by its students. It is a place where a child's passion for ballet is fueled and given the platform to flourish, a sentiment shared by families who have been with the conservatory for nearly a decade.
The philosophy of the Children's Dance Conservatory, under the guidance of its instructors, is to provide a comprehensive ballet education that shapes students into well-rounded individuals. The training goes far beyond the steps and movements, emphasizing grace, poise, and presentation skills that can be carried through life. Parents who were once students themselves of "Miss Susan" have now enrolled their own children, a powerful testament to the long-standing quality of instruction. They express that ballet helps with sports, poise, and provides a lifelong sense of grace. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to build a strong foundation, starting with pre-ballet for the youngest students and progressing through more advanced youth ballet levels. This structured approach ensures that every student, regardless of their age or prior experience, is given the tools to succeed and grow as a dancer. The nurturing community and the sense of belonging that students feel are what make this conservatory a truly special place.
One of the most celebrated traditions at the Children's Dance Conservatory is their annual production of the Nutcracker. The opportunity for students to perform in a high-quality, professional-level show is a major highlight for both the dancers and their families. Many community members consider these performances to be "spectacular" and on par with professional productions, which speaks volumes about the dedication and talent of the students and the faculty. These performances provide an invaluable platform for young dancers to showcase their hard work and experience the magic of a live theatre production. Beyond The Nutcracker, the conservatory also organizes other dance performances throughout the year, ensuring that students have multiple opportunities to shine on stage. This focus on performance experience sets the school apart and provides a motivating goal for students to work toward throughout their training.
The studio’s commitment to building confidence, fostering friendships, and instilling a love of performance is a core part of its mission. The supportive environment and the strong relationships formed within the conservatory are frequently mentioned by parents as key benefits. It’s a place where students can feel comfortable, express themselves, and build lasting bonds with their peers. For dedicated dancers, the conservatory provides a solid platform to "fulfill her dreams," as one parent noted, highlighting the high caliber of training and the inspiring atmosphere. The emphasis on both technical excellence and personal development ensures that the students not only become skilled dancers but also disciplined, confident, and graceful individuals. This holistic approach to dance education is what has made Children's Dance Conservatory a cherished institution in the Mercer Island and greater Washington community for years.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a wonderful place for children to learn classical ballet. I was a student of Miss Susan as a child and have enrolled all my daughters. They learn such grace and athleticism. Ballet helps with sports, poise, presentation skills, and gives you grace your whole life long. We are very happy with Island youth ballet. Not to mention their shows are spectacular and as good as Pacific Northwest ballet, in my opinion.
October 22 · SuzyqlllOur daughter has not only learned the fundamentals of classical ballet, but also the life lessons of hard work, discipline, poise and stage presence. She belongs to a nurturing community that builds confidence, friendships, and performance. She is in her eighth year at the conservatory and continues to fuel her ballet passion. We are forever grateful to IYB for giving her the platform to fulfill her dreams.
