Everett: Company Stage & School Introduce
For decades, Everett: Company Stage & School has stood as one of Rhode Island's most essential and innovative cultural institutions, serving as a hub where professional artistry, rigorous education, and community engagement intersect. More than just an event venue, Everett is a cross-disciplinary, cross-generational, and cross-cultural ensemble that creates original dance and theater works, performs both locally and nationally, and most importantly, offers transformative educational programs right here in the heart of Providence. Located in the Mount Hope neighborhood, this non-profit organization operates out of a former carriage house, a space that truly embodies its mission of turning a neighborhood resource into a place where new ideas and artists flourish.
Everett's unique structure, encompassing a professional Company, a public Stage, and a dedicated School, allows it to function as a cohesive performing arts incubator. The work created here, often exploring complex social issues through a blend of dance, theater, music, and video, has earned national acclaim, including numerous awards. However, for the local Rhode Island community, its greatest impact may lie in its deep commitment to accessible arts education and providing an intimate, welcoming space for all residents to engage with the arts.
The spirit of Everett is one of collaboration, experimentation, and a deep belief in the artist's role in creating a more "just, equitable and joyous future." The long-standing reputation for mentoring young people, some of whom have gone on to impressive careers in film and performance, speaks volumes about the quality and dedication of its founders and teaching artists. Whether you're a long-time theater-goer, a young person seeking a creative outlet, or an adult looking to take a ballet class, Everett has cultivated an environment where the arts are for everyone.
Everett: Company Stage & School is conveniently situated in a dedicated location at 9 Duncan Ave, Providence, RI 02906, USA. This placement in the Mount Hope neighborhood makes it a central and identifiable landmark for the organization's work and community programs. Its location, easily accessible from major thoroughfares, ensures that it can serve not only Providence residents but also those traveling from East Providence, Cranston, and other parts of the state.
A crucial feature of the venue is its commitment to inclusivity and access. The organization explicitly offers Wheelchair Accessible Entrance and Wheelchair Accessible Parking Lot. This attention to accessibility ensures that all members of the Rhode Island community, regardless of physical ability, can attend performances, participate in classes, and engage with the vital cultural life happening on the Stage.
As a multi-faceted performing arts organization, Everett offers a wide range of services that extend far beyond simply hosting an event. Its three core components—the Company, the Stage, and the School—work together to provide a robust arts experience:
- Professional Performance Company: An ensemble of dance and theater artists that creates and tours original, interdisciplinary works, often focused on social issues, providing high-quality artistic events for the local community and beyond.
- Performing Arts School: Offers in-depth performing arts programming, including dance (like the mentioned hip-hop and ballet), theater, and multimedia classes for all ages, with a strong focus on serving urban youth.
- Free Classes for Youth: The Carriage House School runs after-school programs that offer free dance and theater classes to low-income youth in Providence, focusing on developing creative voices, leadership, and job skills.
- Stage Rentals and Residencies: The venue serves as a resource for partner artists and organizations, frequently hosting resident companies such as a hip-hop dance theater company and a Polynesian dance group.
- Community Performance Events: Hosts regular, affordable community programming to encourage local participation and exposure to the arts.
- Mentorship and Artistic Development: Seasoned artists mentor new generations of young artists, helping them grow their technical skills and artistic vision, as evidenced by the success of former students in film and performance.
Everett is distinguished by its deep connection to the community, its commitment to social change through art, and the range of unique programs offered to Rhode Islanders:
- The Carriage House Stage: An intimate, inviting Black Box theater that acts as both a performance venue and a laboratory for the Company and the School, providing a unique and immediate theatrical experience.
- Open Stage Events: A highly valued monthly forum (typically on the first Friday) that welcomes anyone to perform whatever talent they possess—be it comedy, singing, spoken word, or dance. The inclusive nature and suggested low donation ($5) ensure accessibility for all performers and audience members.
- Friday Night Live: A regular comedy improv series that provides consistent, spontaneous entertainment and a space for local comedic talent to hone their craft.
- Socially Conscious Art: The professional Company is renowned for works like the Freedom Project, a powerful multimedia physical theater piece that addresses critical social issues like mass incarceration, prompting community reflection and discussion.
- Arts Integration Programs: The Company develops and tours unique educational shows, such as "Breaking Down Science" (exploring physics through breakdancing) and "Written in the Air" (on emotional intelligence), integrating arts with STEM and health curricula for schools, museums, and community centers.
- Non-Profit Mission: The organization is driven by a deep philanthropic purpose, ensuring that all aspects of its Company, Stage, and School work toward transforming lives and building a more cohesive urban community.

In the vibrant arts landscape of Rhode Island, choosing Everett means choosing an institution that is deeply invested in both artistic excellence and social impact. What sets this venue apart is its powerful dual role: a world-class artistic company that creates critically acclaimed, thoughtful work, and a generous community school that provides free and affordable access to the arts for those who need it most.
The intimate setting of the Carriage House Stage ensures that every performance, whether it's a professional piece like the impactful Freedom Project or a community event like Open Stage, is a truly engaging, close-up experience. For Providence families, the school offers invaluable performing arts classes, creating a family atmosphere where students are mentored and encouraged to develop confidence and leadership skills alongside their artistic talents. The foundational principle of the organization—that the arts should be accessible to people of every financial status—makes it an unparalleled resource in the state.
By choosing Everett, Rhode Islanders support a non-profit that is actively transforming lives, fostering diverse talent, and using the power of performance to engage with and reflect the most pressing issues in our community, all from its fully wheelchair accessible home base on Duncan Avenue.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have been going to Everett for yrs and have made new friends/family. It's a beautiful place where people can express themselves through the arts. The first Friday of the month, they have open stage. Anyone can go and perfrom whatever talent they have. They ask for a $5 donation but never turn anyone away for a lack of funds. And, they also offer free classes.
April 04 · M CHow long have I known of Everett? Since my granddaughter took a hip-hop class there before we would imagine that she would become a film-maker and improve performer with their mentoring. Even before that my daughter took a ballet class from Dorothy (mother and founder of it all) on her third floor. Since then, I have watched many young people grow and startle us with their talent. How can you not know about Everett? Don't stop until you come to a Friday Night Live or to a performance of the Freedom Project, which is in performance now on weekend nights and Sunday day through 3/19/15.
April 10 · Hilary SalkThe world around us is collapsing and I spent my Sunday afternoon having a life changing experience at the Everett.I was fortunate to see the play Body Bliss starring Ari Brisbon, Grace Colonna, Christopher Johnson, and Anjel Newmann. It helped me escape reality and see and experience Bliss through their powerful performance. The music and dancing were awesome. The story was well crafted to include all the actors and the blend of music and lighting made it a great play.I feel soo furtunate and thankful to see this play at the Everett. Thank you for giving us great art!!!
