Iko Movement Introduce
Iko Movement is not your average dance studio. Located in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, it is a uniquely dedicated space for pole dance and movement arts, built on a foundation of empowerment, safety, and authenticity. This is a business owned and operated by a Woman of Color (WOC), queer individuals, and sex workers, and it is unapologetically committed to celebrating the true roots of pole dancing. Iko Movement offers a transformative experience, where physical strength and emotional well-being are prioritized in equal measure. The studio's philosophy is to provide a space for people to explore, learn, and create through the power of movement without judgment, and to connect with their bodies in a way that is both powerful and genuine.
The atmosphere at Iko Movement is a significant part of its appeal. As one reviewer describes in great detail, "Iko is the best studio in town because it’s the prettiest with the best lighting, prioritizes the safety of students, fosters an environment of acceptance and empowerment, embraces and celebrates pole dancings roots as sex work without co-opting it." This feedback highlights the studio's success in creating a beautiful and safe space for its students. Instructors, like Lillian, Anna, and Del, are not only skilled dancers but also compassionate and knowledgeable coaches who truly care about their students' physical and emotional well-being. They are dedicated to breaking down complex moves and providing consistent, safe education for all levels. This commitment to nurturing the in-house environment is a core value, even if it means they can't always answer the phone immediately, as a reviewer noted, because they are prioritizing the safety of a person hanging upside down.
Iko Movement is conveniently located in downtown Portland at 316 SW 11th Ave #300, Portland, OR 97205. Situated on the third floor, it offers a secluded space for training and creativity, away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. For those driving, street parking is available, though it is metered, so students are advised to use the Parking Kitty app for convenience. Its central location makes it accessible via various forms of public transportation, allowing students from all over the Portland metro area to attend classes easily.
The studio's interior is another highlight, with two open studios and a third room dedicated to flexibility and contortion classes. The space is equipped with 23 stainless steel poles and includes three bathrooms that can double as dressing rooms. Students have access to a variety of on-site equipment, including yoga mats, therabands, yoga blocks, crash pads, towels, and foam rollers, ensuring they have everything they need for a safe and effective workout. The studio’s commitment to safety is evident in its class structure, with a focus on comprehensive warm-ups and cool-downs that bookend the core training, ensuring students are properly prepared and recover from their intense workouts.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I believe it’s a very nice studio, I wish they could offer more classes and courses … and also I would like to say that all the teachers are incredible they really care about you physically and emotionally, they always try to make you enjoy it
May 28 · enith FloresShort version: Iko is the best studio in town because it’s the prettiest with the best lighting, prioritizes the safety of students, fosters an environment of acceptance and empowerment, embraces and celebrates pole dancings roots as sex work without co-opting it, and every coach is unique in their style, while being united in their curriculum so you always know you’re getting consistent education no matter who’s teaching it or what’s being taught.Long version: After taking a break from dancing for two years, I’m back and can honestly say Iko is the best pole dance studio in Portland. I’ve been to all of them, and I swear if I see another millennial gray dance studio I’m going to jump off the burnside bridge.Lillian is so empathic and supportive, and really cares about your safety, and has perspective on every aspect of Pole, from its roots in sex work, to a tool for empowerment.Anna and Del are also great coaches and very valuable resources for their respective specialties, and also really great at breaking things down for a layman like me to understand and execute.I’ve also found the class structure to be the safest way to learn, which is 30 mins warm up, and 30 min post cool down stretches, with the hard stuff in the middle. The hard stuff being moves that build on each other each week, instead of random disconnected moves every week that you squeeze into 30 mins after a 10 min warm up, with little to no cool down.Everyone does a great job for a small business, where yeah, it’s pretty impossible to answer phones and emails right away when you literally have people’s lives in your hands hanging upside down. Trust me, I know from running my own salon, where I wear all the hats, and I am glad they prioritize safety and nurturing the in house environment, even at the cost of the immediate access that we all are conditioned to expect these days thanks to the internet/social media ect…If all of that sounds reasonable, and you want to support a studio that’s owned and operated by a WOC, sex workers, and queer folxs?A DEI nightmare in the end times of these here united (sarcasticlly,) states? Then Iko movement is your only option, and I can’t wait to meet you in the studio :)
January 28 · Chris EttrickIko Movement is easily my favorite pole studio in Portland, and the only one where I feel comfortable working as a coach and patronizing as a student. I highly recommend this Black Woman owned business. The wide range of flexibility, dance, and pole class offerings are supportive of many different goals, and can be tailored beautifully to the personal needs of each student. I appreciate the autonomy and trust provided to coaches and students alike. I can't recall ever being misgendered here, which is unfortunately uncommon in pole/dance spaces, and speaks to the culture established within the Iko community. Multiple of the current coaches as well as the owner have experience dancing in clubs, and Iko Movement has consistently offered free classes for Black str!ppers and sex workers. I find these factors so important to the overall impact and accessibility of the business. The space is big, private, and beautiful. The owner, Lillian, is a phenomenal person who I love working for.
February 02 · Juniper LuxThe community is what makes this place special and what keeps me coming back. The pricing now is on par with other pole places here in Portland but I understand how the recent change might affect some people. The studio is in a great place to access via public transit. The coaches care about each student and their progress and goals. The students here support and encourage each other. I would recommend this studio to anyone who wants to give pole a shot like I did two years ago. I hope more classes become available and the business is sustainable. This space is inclusive but may not fit everyone’s needs in terms of personal preference. I know some may not like the personal touch to each class. But I absolutely love it!! I like that we talk to each other and encourage each other. This place is also special because they care about the people that work in the clubs and s workers. Lots of the coaches have experience within the str!p clubs and respect for s workers. It’s not just fitness here!
February 03 · Aberdeen StuartAs someone who gets anxious about going out and doing anything physical around others. I have to say IKO Movement has been the best place for me to work out and not feel anxious, judged, or uncomfortable. When I go to the gym I usually sit in my car for a few minutes trying to get myself inside the building. Here I’m excited to get out and see what Lillian has to teach me. All the coaches are so supportive and helpful during every class, it really makes you feel like you can achieve any stretch/pose that’s being taught.
