We were beyond excited when she was selected and overjoyed thinking of all the opportunities she will have starting her 7th grade year. Well, all the smoke cleared quickly. Being homeschooled (before covid) then going to (public) school was/is a difficult transition.-The school is segregated. Only whites and Asians are in honor classes. My daughter met friends in/outside of SOTA who are all of different ethnic groups. A few of them started together at SOTA in 7th or 8th grade and she met others in an accelerated program. Shortly after them having multiple classes together, a few of her friends disappeared. The 2 whites and the Asian kids were all moved to "honors". While all the Blacks, Hispanics and Brown straight A/B Muslim girl with almost perfect attendance, all have classes together. Now as far as I know, they are all good kids that all have good to great grades, except one. They all have good to great attendance, all except one but NONE of them are in "honors". My daughter said though she sees a lot of white kids, there may be one or two in a some of her classes but not at the same time. We see a lot of white kids go in and out of school but not in class with kids of color. My daughter was able to attend a couple honors classes, she came home and she said, "I found all the missing white kids"-The staff doesn't really care. They tell parents what they want to hear but do not act on the things they say. I'd go into detail but that would take forever. I have receipts. Parents please talk to your kids and make sure the school is doing or providing what they said they will for your child. Though it may be in writing, they say they don't have it or will not honor the arrangements. I had to contact the board of education to make them do what we agreed they would do to help my child succeed. School staff said they don't have an agreement but the superintendent emailed me a copy. They had it, just didn't act on it. Which may partially contribute to the child's suicide. Parents, talk to your kids daily keep in contact with the school and get everything in writing. Be the loudest supporter for your child and don't be afraid to harass the board of education if needed. Worse case, take your kid out of school until your child's needs are met. Mental health is important. Watch how your kids act, watch what they're doing online, check their text messages (with or without them around), and again communicate and listen to them. Allow them a safe space to tell you any and everything, trust them, pray with and for them and document everything (doctors, counselors, teachers, etc.)-Their food can be decent at times (not like the suburbs) but too much cheese. That doesn't include the brown bagged "food" my dogs wouldn't eat. My child is lactose intolerant, she brings snacks ever day, in case the food isn't edible.Other than those few things, all the teachers I've met, seems nice, stern with expectations but a willingness to help (my daughter agrees for the most part) and the they are diverse-ish. The school has tons of opportunities, lots of programs and can be much better with better leadership, accountability and follow through. I'm not trying to minimize the good the school offers, which is a lot, but I moreso want to shed light on the bad in hopes of things changing for the better for all our kids, equally.With God, all things are possible.

July 22 · Brianna HallIt lives off its reputation. It is slowly becoming a normal city school. I have found that communication to parents is very weak. They make people cram into the lower seating for orchestra and jazz concerts instead of allowing you to use the balcony. Which we use to. I don’t think they care that you really can’t see your kids in the back rows from those seats, but the woman who “stands guard” really ruins the night with what seems to be pleasurable to her. Sad. Glad I’m not going to have to go much more, no longer enjoy it. They don’t return messages and that’s your only means of contacting anyone other than emails.I just changed to 0 they cannot control these kids. The administrative staff is tough with parents coming in for functions yet there are no consequences to kids who fight, failing grades and act like fools at events, but then again look at some of the parents who shout out to their kids during a concert or graduation even after asked not to. There is no support to kids who are trying to learn and improve their skills. This is a regular city school now no better. And the applications have a very low bar to get in. There’s no credit to senior kids who take advanced classes and at graduation all the grades are compared equally. Sad but not a good school. Don’t recommend.

I will not put my child in this school that was one of the best school in the roc . Too much bullied fights and staff act like they can't handle nothing . Girls locking the bathroom door so nobody could come in so they could smoke weed yes . Is alots going on in this school . Don't put your kid in this school school of the arts she or he will be bullied. Look at the news is sad
