My daughter and I couldn't wait for her to join SOTA. We were beyond excited when she was selected and overjoyed thinking of all the opportunities she will have starting her 7th grade year. Well, all the smoke cleared quickly. Being homeschooled (before covid) then going to (public) school was/is a difficult transition.-The school is segregated. Only whites and Asians are in honor classes. My daughter met friends in/outside of SOTA who are all of different ethnic groups. A few of them started together at SOTA in 7th or 8th grade and she met others in an accelerated program. Shortly after them having multiple classes together, a few of her friends disappeared. The 2 whites and the Asian kids were all moved to "honors". While all the Blacks, Hispanics and Brown straight A/B Muslim girl with almost perfect attendance, all have classes together. Now as far as I know, they are all good kids that all have good to great grades, except one. They all have good to great attendance, all except one but NONE of them are in "honors". My daughter said though she sees a lot of white kids, there may be one or two in a some of her classes but not at the same time. We see a lot of white kids go in and out of school but not in class with kids of color. My daughter was able to attend a couple honors classes, she came home and she said, "I found all the missing white kids"-The staff doesn't really care. They tell parents what they want to hear but do not act on the things they say. I'd go into detail but that would take forever. I have receipts. Parents please talk to your kids and make sure the school is doing or providing what they said they will for your child. Though it may be in writing, they say they don't have it or will not honor the arrangements. I had to contact the board of education to make them do what we agreed they would do to help my child succeed. School staff said they don't have an agreement but the superintendent emailed me a copy. They had it, just didn't act on it. Which may partially contribute to the child's suicide. Parents, talk to your kids daily keep in contact with the school and get everything in writing. Be the loudest supporter for your child and don't be afraid to harass the board of education if needed. Worse case, take your kid out of school until your child's needs are met. Mental health is important. Watch how your kids act, watch what they're doing online, check their text messages (with or without them around), and again communicate and listen to them. Allow them a safe space to tell you any and everything, trust them, pray with and for them and document everything (doctors, counselors, teachers, etc.)-Their food can be decent at times (not like the suburbs) but too much cheese. That doesn't include the brown bagged "food" my dogs wouldn't eat. My child is lactose intolerant, she brings snacks ever day, in case the food isn't edible.Other than those few things, all the teachers I've met, seems nice, stern with expectations but a willingness to help (my daughter agrees for the most part) and the they are diverse-ish. The school has tons of opportunities, lots of programs and can be much better with better leadership, accountability and follow through. I'm not trying to minimize the good the school offers, which is a lot, but I moreso want to shed light on the bad in hopes of things changing for the better for all our kids, equally. With God, all things are possible. - Nisha Nikole

School Of The Arts Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For New York families seeking an educational environment that equally prioritizes academic rigor and intense artistic training, the School of the Arts (SOTA) in Rochester, NY, stands out as a preeminent public educational institution. SOTA serves students in grades 7 through 12 and operates with a mission dedicated to academic, artistic, and humanistic student success. Unlike traditional public high schools, SOTA offers a specialized curriculum where students carry a full academic course load while also engaging in a rigorous Fine Arts sequence in a chosen major field of study.

As a magnet school within the Rochester City School District (RCSD), admission to SOTA is based on a formal audition process, ensuring that the student body is composed of highly motivated and artistically inclined young adults. This commitment to the arts is not merely an elective; a SOTA diploma requires students to complete an eight-credit sequence in their selected arts discipline, in addition to fulfilling all New York State Regents graduation requirements. This dual focus prepares students for both college and a career in the arts.

According to public data from the New York State Education Department (NYSED), SOTA has demonstrated a strong commitment to student completion, reporting high graduation rates. For the 2020 4-year August Cohort, the graduation rate was 88%, which highlights the school's effectiveness in guiding students through a challenging dual-curriculum program. The school also features a notably diverse student body, with a 2023-24 enrollment of 1,057 students, including significant representation across all major racial and ethnic groups in New York State.

What is Worth Choosing: The Path to Professional Artistry and Academic Excellence

Choosing the School of the Arts is a decision to commit to a rigorous, specialized public education that is rare within the New York State system. What makes SOTA truly worth choosing for New York families is the opportunity it provides for an artistically gifted child to pursue their passion without sacrificing a comprehensive academic foundation. In a state with world-class arts and culture, SOTA is an entry point for serious young artists.

The structure—where an academic core is required alongside an eight-credit artistic sequence—ensures graduates are competitive for top colleges and conservatories.
