The Crew House Introduce
For Massachusetts residents and the creative community across the Pioneer Valley, **The Crew House** in Northampton, MA, represents a truly unique and cherished venue. Described not just as a space, but as an experience, it functions primarily as a specialized **dance hall** and performance venue with a spiritual connection to the arts. Located picturesquely on the banks of Paradise Pond on the Smith College campus, the Crew House offers an environment that perfectly blends natural tranquility with artistic functionality.
Originally a boathouse built in 1920, the upper floor has been lovingly renovated and preserved, maintaining its character while incorporating modern features essential for a 21st-century dance studio and performance space. The atmosphere is consistently noted for its intimacy and peacefulness—a stark contrast to large, commercial venues in the area. This quality makes it particularly well-suited for works that are personal, allowing performers and attendees alike to feel a genuine, close connection to the art being presented. The venue is not a large-scale commercial operation but rather a significant cultural asset, providing on-site services for those looking to host or attend a unique event. It is a place where fond memories are made, art is deeply felt, and the natural beauty of Western Massachusetts is an integral part of the experience.
The unique setting and layout have made it a favorite, especially within the Five College community (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and UMass Amherst), where students and faculty value the "right blend of intimacy and enough space" that the Crew House provides. Its designation as a 'dance hall' reflects its primary use as a center for movement, performance, and creative expression. The combination of a specialized, professional setting with such a calming, natural backdrop is what elevates The Crew House beyond a simple rental space to a truly memorable destination in Massachusetts. The space is also welcoming to families, proudly noted as being **good for kids**.

The Crew House Reviews
I performed a multimedia performance piece I developed out of an Amherst College class near the end of my second year at Hampshire College here. It was actually my FAVORITE space that we performed it in.It was meant to be performed in a Dance Studio setting (which we did at Amherst, Hampshire & Mt. Holyoke) -- BUT, I ❤️'d presenting it in the Crew House setting at Smith because it was SUCH a unique space, and it gave the piece an ENTIRELY different feel.It was also SUCH a tranquil and relaxing space to perform it in, because we performed it at the University just before we did it at Smith, and we performed it in Bezanson Recital Hall at the Fine Arts Center by contrast and THAT was COMPLETELY nerve-wracking.Bezanson is NOT an intimate performing space AT ALL; so it didn't feel "right" and the two UMass performances felt VERY commercial, which obviously the piece was NOT. It was intimate and personal work, so the Smith performances (other than the ones at Amherst & Hampshire) were my FAVORITE ones.We performed it at Mt. Holyoke last before the end of the spring semester (in their Dance Studio), which was ok, but still, Smith's Crew House was the BEST venue we performed it in overall. It was just the right blend of intimacy and enough space. After I'd graduated from Hampshire, and was living in Noho, I'd frequently bring my kayak here and go paddling and relive my fond memories of being in this space and performing in it. Thanks Smith College for the use of the Crew House and for the great nostalgic memories! ❤️✌️
