Why it is worth choosing the Academy of Hawaiian Arts Inc:
Choosing the Academy of Hawaiian Arts Inc for your hula journey is about more than just finding a dance class; it's about investing in a true cultural experience. The primary reason for its high regard among students is the leadership of Kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu. As one student review highlights, he is an "amazing" teacher who inspires his students to become better dancers and, by extension, better individuals. His expertise and dedication provide a level of instruction that is both authentic and deeply personal. The collaborative and team-oriented atmosphere is a huge draw, as it creates a supportive community where students feel a sense of belonging and shared purpose. This camaraderie is a significant part of the experience, making the hard work of training feel rewarding and enjoyable. The academy's commitment to working together as a team is a theme that resonates strongly with its members.
However, it is important to acknowledge all perspectives. While the studio’s instruction is highly praised by many, a review of a past performance noted an unfortunate incident involving the owner and a technical issue, which some found unprofessional and disruptive. This review, though from an isolated event, serves as a reminder that like any public-facing organization, experiences can vary. However, the consistent praise for the dancers' dedication and skill, as noted even in this critical review, speaks volumes about the quality of the training provided at the academy. The hard work and talent of the students are a direct reflection of the rigorous and effective instruction they receive. For those in California looking for a place to learn authentic hula, the Academy of Hawaiian Arts Inc offers a unique blend of high-quality instruction, cultural immersion, and a supportive community. It provides an opportunity to connect with an ancient and beautiful art form under the guidance of a respected master, which is a rare and valuable experience. Academy of Hawaiian Arts Inc Reviews
Kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu is amazing. I am now in my 3rd year of training with him. I feel like I've become a better hula dancer. I like that everyone works together as a team. My experience at the Academy has been nothing but amazing.
July 15 · May SerranoWent to see their show this year and the owner was so unprofessional and quite frankly ruined the show. Apparently the sound guys were off but us in the audience could not tell. This guy spends the show cussing the guys out on stage, flipping them off while on stage and walked off stage leaving the audience awkwardly sitting there. I only gave 2 stars because the dancers were good and I know how hard they worked to get ready for a show that their teacher ruined. I won't waste my money on one of their shows again.
December 13 · RenMark and the crew, as well as the students are, in my book, "solid gold".Keep kicking ass at Merrie Monarch. I hope to find a way to see you there in person before I return to the ocean, earth, fire & sky.
May 09 · Steven GibsonThis place is filled with so much love and community. Kumu Mark and the kukuis put their heart into their work, into creating beautiful dancers.
April 10 · Kilikina RobinsonWhat amazing performers. Thank you all at Academy of Hawaiian Arts for your art and your talent. I love watching you all dance.
