Founded as a grassroots non-profit organization, its mission is to preserve, amplify, and share the deep roots of Mexican American culture through a wide range of artistic and educational programs. The name "Los Cenzontles" is from the Nahuatl word for "mockingbirds," a fitting name for an institution that celebrates and echoes the rich traditions of Mexican music, dance, and folk arts. This center is more than just an art or music school; it is a sanctuary and a second home for generations of local families, providing a space where individuals can connect with their heritage and express themselves creatively.

The academy offers a place for youth and adults to learn directly from maestros of traditional Mexican genres, instilling a profound sense of cultural pride and ensuring that these living traditions continue to thrive. The center’s work extends beyond its physical location, as it also operates as a professional band, a production studio, and a media producer, creating acclaimed documentaries and music recordings that celebrate and share authentic Mexican art forms with the world. This holistic approach to cultural preservation and education makes Los Cenzontles a truly special and outsized force in the Bay Area's cultural landscape.
The core of Los Cenzontles's work is its dedication to providing a strong foundation in cultural identity for young people. Through hands-on classes and immersive experiences, students learn to play traditional instruments like the jarana and vihuela, master intricate dance choreography, and explore various folk arts. This rich, multi-disciplinary approach allows students to build not only artistic skills but also confidence, resilience, and a deep connection to their roots. The academy is a place where every person can feel at home and be part of a larger community that celebrates diversity and heritage. It stands as a testament to the power of cultural arts to foster a sense of belonging and to strengthen communities from the inside out.

I called from a non profit organization, i called to ask for the two women to come sing to our event, asked for an estimate of how much they would charge to come. One of the ladies said well how much money do you have. I replied well how much do you charge and she respond again the more money you have the more we charge. Horrible horrible experience!! Never again will i ever call them. The lady i spoke to is one of the singers.
