Yesterday, we arrived at the YMCA pool around 5 pm after school and work (we drive 30 minutes to get there). Initially, the lifeguard explained that swim lessons were happening in half the pool and told us we could either wait an hour to use the family pool or use the lap lanes, which was fine.Around 5:30 pm, the lifeguard told my kids they should not swim in the lap lanes, because adults are swimming there (playing). By 5:45 pm, the family pool had become free, but she still did not allow them to swim. We waited until 5:50 pm and asked again, but were told to wait another 40 minutes. After 6 pm, another family arrived and was immediately allowed to use the family pool, even though she could clearly see that we had been waiting. To plan better in the future, I asked another lifeguard which days the family pool is open/closed, and I was told that the family pool is always open. This makes the earlier restrictions confusing and frustrating. This experience was very disappointing for my children, especially since we travel 30 minutes to get there. While we respect pool rules and safety, inconsistent treatment and lack of clear communication made it a frustrating experience. I hope the YMCA can review this situation to ensure fair and consistent treatment for all families. - Sruthy Wilson

Nashua YMCA - YMCA of Greater Nashua Introduce

For families, individuals, and seniors in Southern New Hampshire, the search for a comprehensive wellness center that truly serves the entire community often leads to the doors of the Nashua YMCA, part of the YMCA of Greater Nashua. Far exceeding the offerings of a standard gym or fitness center, the Nashua YMCA functions as a pivotal non-profit organization dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. It is a place where Granite Staters can invest in their physical health, mental well-being, and community connection all in one location.

The Nashua Y is a multi-faceted facility that combines the amenities of a modern fitness center—including a fully-equipped gym, extensive weightlifting area, and diverse group exercise studios—with robust programs designed for all life stages. From state-of-the-art swimming pools and a running track to specialized dance schools and summer camps, the center ensures that every member of a New Hampshire family can find an avenue to grow, learn, and thrive. This intentional focus on the whole person and the broader community is what elevates the YMCA from a recreational facility to an essential wellness resource. Their core values—caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility—are not just words; they are the foundation upon which every program, from childcare to adult leagues, is built.

As a non-profit and charity organization, the YMCA of Greater Nashua is strongly committed to accessibility, ensuring that finances are never a barrier to wellness. Through the generous support of their community, the Y is able to offer financial assistance, known as the 'Y Cares' program, to ensure all residents, regardless of income, have access to their facilities and vital programs, including childcare, camps, and membership. This charitable mission is deeply ingrained, reflecting their long-standing dedication to strengthening the foundations of the community for over 135 years.

While the atmosphere is overwhelmingly positive, welcoming, and professional, the volume of high-quality services can occasionally lead to operational challenges, especially in heavily utilized areas like the aquatics facility, as one recent family noted. The Y is a busy place, and as a community hub, balancing the needs of various programs—like dedicated swim lessons, team practice, and open family swim—is an ongoing logistical task. Members are encouraged to communicate directly with staff and consult the activity grids provided by the center to ensure clarity on scheduling and use of specific areas like the family pool and lap lanes, thus helping the organization maintain the high standard of fair and consistent treatment it strives to deliver to all its Southern New Hampshire patrons. The general sentiment remains highly favorable, with many echoing the view that the facility and its programs offer tremendous value, especially for families.
