Asheville Contemporary Dance Introduce
Asheville Contemporary Dance, officially known as the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre (ACDT), and its school, the New Studio of Dance, stand as a cornerstone of Western North Carolina's vibrant performing arts community. Established as the region's first professional modern dance company, ACDT has been a leader in dance education and performance for decades. The organization is a non-profit professional dance company that believes everyone is a dancer, and through art and inspiration, it aims to illuminate the intersections between intellectual and emotional expression. The New Studio of Dance, founded in 1970, serves as the official school of ACDT, providing a world-class dance education to students of all ages, levels, and backgrounds.
The philosophy of Asheville Contemporary Dance is deeply rooted in fostering a non-competitive and encouraging environment. This approach is highly valued by families, as it allows students to truly blossom as dancers and performers without the pressure often associated with competitive studios. The school prides itself on taking novice dancers through the many stages of technical and artistic development, preparing them to perform at a professional level. This is made possible by a team of experienced, hard-working, and encouraging teachers who are dedicated to their craft. As one satisfied parent noted in a review, the instructors and owners are "wonderful, creative, and caring," and the non-competitive atmosphere has allowed their daughter to thrive for seven years.
Beyond the daily classes, Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre is a significant contributor to the cultural life of Asheville and beyond. The company performs up to 80 times a year, both locally and internationally. They are also the producers of several key dance and performing arts festivals in the area, including the Fringe Arts Festival and the North Carolina Dance Festival. This high level of engagement with the professional dance world provides students with a unique and enriching experience, exposing them to different cultures and forms of dance. The studio’s performances, particularly the annual "Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and their major May production, are brilliantly staged with professional-quality choreography and hand-made costumes that feel like works of art.
Asheville Contemporary Dance is centrally located at 20 Commerce St, Asheville, NC 28801, USA. This address places the studio in the bustling heart of downtown Asheville, making it a convenient and exciting location for students and families. Its proximity to other downtown attractions, including The BeBe Theatre, which ACDT operates, makes it a true hub for arts and culture.
The studio demonstrates a strong commitment to accessibility, offering a wheelchair-accessible car park. While a downtown location can sometimes present parking challenges, the dedicated accessibility feature is a thoughtful touch that shows an effort to accommodate all members of the community. This focus on inclusivity helps make the arts available to a broader range of people in Western North Carolina.
For the convenience of its clientele, Asheville Contemporary Dance accepts both credit cards and debit cards for payments. This modern and flexible approach to tuition and fees simplifies the administrative process for families, allowing them to focus on their child's artistic development. The combination of a central location, accessible facilities, and streamlined payment options contributes to the overall positive and professional experience at the studio.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’m forever grateful for the experience my daughter had while enrolled in New Studio of Dance from age 7 to 18. It kept her busy and me on the road. It was a very special experience for us both. She was able to experience dances from all over world as well well as getting to have dance instructors different cultures. Highly recommend 💙🥰
April 25 · BeeJae JonesMy daughter has been dancing at ACDT for 7 years including summer camps and dance intensives. The owners, Susan and Giles are wonderful, creative, and caring. The non-competitive environment has allowed my daughter to blossom as a dancer/performer. The teachers are experienced, hard-working and encouraging. Every performance is brilliantly staged and choreographed; the hand-made costumes are like something out of a museum. We love ACDT/New Studio of Dance. They feel like family!
July 28 · Laura SheridanFrom the time my 38-year-old daughter started there when she was about 6 years old, I have never had anything but the most wonderful of experiences. The performances that the children get to act in (as opposed to recitals) gives them experiences that cannot be matched. There’s a great joy and excitement and the ability to learn that performing is not anything to be frightened of. And somehow Susan and Giles managed to make the youngest to the oldest students have a blast performing! I have nothing but praise for what they do. I’ve been an elementary teacher (so I can appreciate excellent handling of kids) for over 40 years and now bring other kids to see their performances and my students’, including my grandchildren. I hope someday they will get to perform. All I can say is there are the best!
May 10 · Susan ShillcockLove this dance studio! When my 11 year old daughter came to me and said she would like to begin taking beginner ballet lessons, this is the only studio that even bothered to call me back. Not only did they call me back but their positive encouragement of her following her dreams and ambitions (no matter how late a start) have been inspiring for both of us. They have worked hands on with her and every other student in her class get individualized attention.
January 20 · Christen RinaldiThis is a loving, family-owned studio where all four of my children have danced or performed. They accept all children, no matter their ability. My son has been helped a great deal here despite having mild cerebral palsy. Another son is brain injured and found a niche here in the fencing classes that co-owner Giles teaches. One of my daughters has a real passion for dance and has been dancing since she was three. The studio is very gentle with the students, making sure not to push them into pointe shoes before their feet are ready for it. My husband and I also really appreciate that they dress the children in very creative and modest costumes. Susan and Giles also run much sought-after summer camps that have long waiting lists. Under their careful guidance, my children have learned to be disciplined young people. They have prospered.
