Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy Introduce
For decades, Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy (MJPAA) has been a cornerstone of the performing arts community in the Tampa Bay area. Located in Tampa, FL, this academy is much more than a typical dance studio; it is a comprehensive training ground for aspiring "triple-threat" performers, offering a diverse curriculum that spans dance, acting, voice, and music. What began as a dance school has evolved into a full-fledged academy, providing a holistic and well-rounded education for students from all walks of life. From toddlers taking their very first steps in a "Movin & Groovin" class to advanced students preparing for professional auditions, MJPAA fosters a love for the arts while instilling discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic. The academy’s commitment to excellence is evident in its professional productions, skilled instructors, and supportive community, making it a beloved institution for families across Florida.
The academy's long-standing reputation is built on a foundation of professional training and a nurturing environment. As one happy parent noted in a review, they were "so happy I enrolled my kid here. She’s learned so much, has dedicated teachers, and has loved every minute of it." This sentiment is echoed by many who have experienced the MJPAA difference. The instructors, such as Ms. Jen and Ms. Krisha, are not only wonderfully gifted teachers but also mentors who truly care about the students' growth. One parent was astounded by the high quality of the academy's production of The Nutcracker, describing the dancers' skill level as "akin to watching the Russian Ballet." This level of artistry, even among very young performers, is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire staff. It’s a place where students can truly flourish, whether they aspire to a professional career or simply want to develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
A key feature that sets MJPAA apart is its commitment to creating a positive and welcoming community. The staff, from the front desk to the teachers, are known for their warmth and genuine connection with the students. As one review highlighted, "ALL the staff know her... She is welcome there by all the teachers." This personal touch helps every student feel valued and encourages them to thrive. The academy also has a unique and highly praised initiative called the Class Assistant Preparatory Program (CAPP), which allows older, dedicated students to serve as role models and assist in teaching younger classes. This program not only gives the older students valuable leadership experience but also provides younger dancers with inspiring role models. The older students are described as "hard working, friendly, and succeed in school and life," a clear reflection of the academy's emphasis on building strong character in addition to technical skill. The program’s ability to "imprint" on younger students and create a cycle of mentorship is truly a gift to the community.
The curriculum at MJPAA is designed to allow students to become versatile performers, or as the academy refers to it, a "triple-threat." While dance is a core component, students have the opportunity to delve into acting, music, and voice. This comprehensive approach means that a student can take a classical ballet class in one studio, a hip-hop class in another, and then move on to a musical theater or voice lesson, all within the same state-of-the-art facility. The academy’s extensive list of programs, including the esteemed Classical Ballet of Tampa upper division, ensures that students have a clear path for growth, whether they are pursuing a recreational hobby or an intensive, pre-professional training program. The quality of this training is reflected in the success of its alumni, many of whom have gone on to work professionally on Broadway, in television, and with major dance companies. The academy has been recognized as one of the top dance schools in the country, a well-deserved honor that speaks to its high standards.
Beyond the classroom, MJPAA provides students with numerous opportunities to perform and showcase their talents. The annual productions, like The Nutcracker, are a highlight for the entire community, providing a professional and memorable stage experience for dancers of all ages. These performances not only build confidence but also teach students the discipline and teamwork required for a large-scale production. Additionally, the academy has a competitive team, Universal Movement Performing Arts Company, which gives dedicated students the chance to perform and compete at various events, earning numerous honors and awards along the way. These experiences are invaluable for students who are considering a future in the performing arts. However, even for those who do not wish to compete, the sense of community and dedication found at MJPAA is unparalleled. The academy’s philosophy is to provide a positive, structured environment where members can soar at an individual pace, learn good sportsmanship, and understand the power of teamwork. It is a place where students can truly find their "second home," as one parent beautifully put it.
In conclusion, Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy has established itself as a true leader in arts education in Tampa. Its decades of experience, commitment to professional training, and focus on character development make it a standout choice for families. The academy provides more than just classes; it offers a journey of self-discovery and growth, supported by a caring and expert faculty. From the impressive productions to the unique CAPP program, every aspect of MJPAA is designed to nurture a love for the arts and to help students reach their full potential. For anyone in the Tampa Bay area looking for a place where their child can not only learn to dance, sing, or act, but also grow into a confident, disciplined, and kind individual, Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy is an excellent and highly recommended choice.

Mary Jo's Performing Arts Academy Reviews
First full year and I’m so happy I enrolled my kid here. She’s learned so much, has dedicated teachers, and has loved every minute of it. Ms Jen and Ms Krisha are wonderful instructors. So happy we made the decision to come here!
May 22 · Cecilia ClaudioWhen I signed my daughter up for dance at MJPAA I thought it would be similar to my childhood community rec center dance classes. My naivety was evident when she performed in the Nutcracker at age 4, the production and skill level of the dancers was akin to watching the Russian Ballet! She loves it there and I am so proud to watch her confidence grow every year. ALL the staff know her, even though we never entered competition until recently. She is welcome there by all the teachers. I have never stressed about her particular skill levels, nor do I have delusions of her being the next Misty Copeland. But she dances REALLY WELL because the teachers are so gifted. And the CAPP program is perhaps the best gift they give to students. MJPAA allows the older girls to be role models and assist in teaching. These girls are wonderful and have imprinted on my daughter, they are hard working, friendly, and succeed in school and life. And they genuinely seem happy to be at MJPAA. We are so blessed to have stumbled upon this place.
August 03 · Sarah ReidI don't write reviews often and try to do it when I have something positive to say. This is absolutely the case with Mary Jo's. It took us three years to clearly see how they do have a family environment. Our daughter loves her classes more and more each year which says something. They even helped us relive a special moment and opened their doors during their busy camp season to accommodate. Their patience and understanding during a difficult time will never be forgotten. Dance is a journey and not a destination. And we are so fortunate and blessed to have a dance studio for our daughter that we are thrilled and excited to go back to.
July 01 · Karl LunneyRegistered my daughter the same day they opened registration. (Within minutes of getting an email asking to register). Instead of enrolling her in a class they out her on a waitlist. When I called to find out why, they told me they sold out. Not sure how they filled up within 5 minutes of opening registration. The lady I spoke to said she couldn't explain it either. I'll be taking my daughter to an ethical dance studio.
August 18 · August GonçalvesWe love Mary Jo’s Performing Arts Academy! Our daughter began dancing here at age 2 and adores going to dance each week. When choosing a Tampa Dance Studio, I wanted her to go somewhere that felt like “home” as she grew up and I’m thankful to say we have found that at MJPAA. The teachers and staff are wonderful, patient, encouraging, inspiring, and talented. Most of all, they take care of the dancers as if they were their own children. MJPAA has become a second family to our daughter and we look forward to watching her to continue to grow as a dancer and a student.
