Technique classes – 4 stars when full technique class is provided. A complete advanced class, including corrections -- exactly what ballet class should be.Experience performing with this school – negative rating.There was unusual monitoring by a student’s parent who also is a representative of the school. In response to my request for a refund of prepaid tuition, the man who handles tuition responded with unsettling mentions of “body type” and “talent.” I requested the refund due to an offensive call out page in their show program (an age-based call out). So not only were the very personal topics he introduced not pertinent to addressing the age issue, but it was skin-crawling for him to opine on them unprompted. What other physical characteristics might he be monitoring and creepily tallying among the dancers to “celebrate” his diversity? You name it. Definitely not ok when he’s observing children too!His immediate response was clear that they had zero concern about having offended someone; he was only upset about refunding money. From his position as almighty judge of others’ feelings, he offered that I “shouldn’t” have felt offended and should be grateful to be their paying customer at my age, talent, and body type.It would have been perfectly appropriate if the teacher had wanted to broach topics of body type and dance technique/capabilities with me – it’s well within her role. But some stranger I’ve never seen before suggesting he was familiar enough with me to do so, it’s just downright icky.The way that man treated me in his role representing the entire school – first offensive, then dismissive of my concern, and then outright disrespectfully – is inexcusable. I hadn’t encountered anything like that before in the dance, fitness, or corporate business worlds, or anywhere really. That interaction at least put studios’ unspoken undercurrents on my radar in selecting a ballet school for my child recently. Fortunately, I’ve been protective enough of dance in my own life to preserve it as a positive experience at any level of technique/capabilities, age, body type, and anything else someone might not like.

Ms. D is both a talented dancer herself and an experienced and trained teacher. My daughter adores her beginning ballet classes and looks forward to dancing on pointe with the older students in the coming years. My favorite part of the Ballet Academy is that they perform a complete ballet annually with original choreography, beautiful costumes, props, etc. It gives the students a goal to work towards and allows them to work together to create something monumental.
