Dayton Ballet School Introduce
Located in the heart of downtown Dayton, the Dayton Ballet School stands as a pillar of dance education with a rich history and a strong connection to the professional arts community. As the official school of the Dayton Ballet, one of the oldest ballet companies in the United States, it offers a unique and prestigious training ground for aspiring dancers of all ages. The school's mission is to provide the highest quality dance education, not only for those dreaming of a professional career but also for individuals who simply want to experience the joy and discipline of dance. This strong affiliation with the professional company provides unparalleled opportunities that set it apart from other dance studios in the Ohio region.
The school's legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of ballet in the Miami Valley. Founded by Josephine and Hermene Schwarz in 1927, the Dayton Ballet School has been shaping young dancers for decades, with many going on to achieve great accomplishments in the art of ballet. It is the only ballet school in the Miami Valley associated with a professional dance company, creating a seamless pathway for talented students. This connection provides students with the extraordinary chance to be chosen for professional productions by the Dayton Ballet Company, such as the renowned holiday classic, "The Nutcracker." For many students and their families in Ohio, this is a dream come true, offering a taste of what it's like to perform on a professional stage like the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre.
The school is situated at a landmark location, 140 N Main St, Dayton, OH 45402, USA. This central downtown address places it at the epicenter of Dayton's cultural scene, making it a familiar destination for locals. As part of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, the school is housed in a professional and secure facility, providing peace of mind for parents and students. The building is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring both a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that the opportunity to learn dance is available to as many people as possible. The downtown location, while vibrant, is an urban environment, and families should be aware of this setting, which some may find less conventional than a suburban studio.
While the downtown location provides great artistic synergy, it also presents some logistical considerations. As one customer review noted, the waiting area is located on a different floor from the studios, and parents are not allowed to watch classes in the room. This policy, while perhaps intended to maintain focus in the studio, can be a point of concern for new families. However, the secure entrance and the professional setting of a historic theatre building are also points of confidence. The school's prime location allows students to share a space with the professional company, creating an inspiring environment where they can be surrounded by dedication and excellence. The easy access to parking and a central meeting point for students from across the region makes it a convenient choice despite the downtown setting.
The Dayton Ballet School offers a variety of specialized training programs, focusing primarily on ballet education for all ages. Their structured curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive and progressive dance education, from a child's first class to pre-professional training. The school's offerings include:
- Children’s Classes: A foundational division for young dancers, typically ages 3-7, that introduces creative movement, musicality, and basic ballet terminology in a fun, nurturing environment.
- Youth Classes: Programs for older children and teens that build on fundamental skills and introduce more complex techniques and choreography.
- Ballet Training: Core curriculum focused on classical ballet technique, which is the foundation for all other dance forms. The school's reputation is built on the strength of this training.
- Boys Classes: Specialized classes tailored to male dancers, providing a focused environment to develop strength and technique.
- Training Programs: Structured, multi-level programs that guide students from their first steps all the way to a pre-professional level.
- Dance Education: Beyond just classes, the school's mission is to provide a complete dance education that includes an appreciation for the art form, history, and professional etiquette.
The school's curriculum is meticulously crafted to ensure a high standard of instruction, with a clear path for students to grow and advance in their skills. This structured approach is a key part of their value proposition.

What makes the Dayton Ballet School worth choosing is the direct and tangible connection it provides to the world of professional ballet. While one reviewer expressed concerns about communication and a non-traditional waiting area, these points are contrasted by another reviewer’s praise for the "great opportunities" and the chance for students to participate in "professional productions." This duality highlights that while the school may operate in a more formal, pre-professional capacity—which can feel different from a casual, community studio—its core value lies in its professional-level training and unique performance pathways. For any child with a serious interest in dance, the opportunity to train with instructors associated with a professional company and perform on the same stage as them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s an investment not just in dance education, but in a potential future in the arts. The long-standing history of the school and its legacy of producing successful dancers and creative individuals further solidifies its position as a top-tier institution. Families in Ohio seeking more than just a hobby—those who are looking for a rigorous, rewarding, and potentially career-shaping experience for their child—will find that the Dayton Ballet School is a distinguished and unparalleled choice in the region. Its strong foundation, elite opportunities, and professional environment make it a highly desirable destination for dedicated students of dance.

Dayton Ballet School Reviews
Awful and dysfunctional ! My daughter did a trial class here. They never answer the phones we had little to no information. The “waiting room” is on the fifth floor it’s literally a closet full of costumes and boxes and there’s maybe 10 chairs and some coloring books for siblings. The teacher did not introduce herself another lady came to collect the children and took them to floor 4. There’s no cameras or tvs to watch your child and you’re not aloud on the same floor let alone same room to watch. When she was brought back we asked questions and she just said she’ll email you. We got one email for placement nothing about the actual price who the teacher is etc. this place is sketchy especially being in downtown Dayton. Will NEVER return!
February 05 · Courtney BowlesGreat opportunities and classes at Dayton Ballet School. Not only do they get to share the same space as the professional company, the students have the opportunity to be chosen to be part of the professional productions by Dayton Ballet Company. My kids have enjoyed being part of The Nutcracker and other shows performed at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theater.
September 22 · Carin SwansonI’ve been taking one of the one hour adult classes one evening a week and am having a great time! You can’t beat the price ($15 if you drop in or a 10 class punch card for $120 aka $12 a class) and the class size is small. Ms. Anne Davis is such a joy and so patient and my class instructor, Melissa, is so encouraging and a great teacher. I look forward to continuing to take these classes as long as I can and would recommend DBS to anyone.
January 28 · Angela WagnerI was a part of the Dayton Ballet Company many years ago. I studied at the school, as did my mother, under the guidance of Ms. Jo, Ms. Bess And Mr. Jon. It’s a fantastic school with fantastic teachers. I was so fortunate. I picked back up at age 40 and have taught 3-7 yr olds ballet and still dance today, competing in latin dancing and ballroom. It’s the best school and I have so many good memories.
July 09 · Mechelle SharpMy Granddaughter came home thrilled about her teacher and the new friends she made. My proud ballerina came home with her first sticker.
