Oregon Irish Dance Academy Introduce
The Oregon Irish Dance Academy (OIDA), a women-owned business founded by sisters Christina and Victoria White, stands as a unique and treasured part of Portland's dance community. Unlike many competitive dance schools, OIDA's core philosophy is centered on providing a fully non-competitive and recreational program for dancers of all ages. The academy's mission is to create a positive, encouraging, and safe environment where students can fall in love with Irish dance, build self-esteem, and forge lasting friendships, all without the pressure of competition. The studio welcomes everyone, whether they are a young child taking their very first steps or an adult fulfilling a lifelong dream to learn Irish dance. With a curriculum designed to be both fun and educational, OIDA is dedicated to helping each student progress at their own pace, celebrating their unique journey in a supportive and uplifting space.
The dedication of the instructors is a recurring theme in the feedback from parents and students. One parent's review perfectly captures this sentiment: "The teachers are not only incredibly talented and knowledgeable, but they are also the kindest, most positive people you could ever hope to meet. They create a space where every dancer feels valued and encouraged, regardless of their skill level or experience. There is absolutely no pressure or competition here, just a pure love of Irish dance and a desire to share that passion with their students." This emphasis on positive reinforcement and a love for the art form is what makes OIDA stand out in the Portland dance scene. Another parent noted how Miss Victoria and her sister make learning fun for young kids by "mixing instruction and playing," which has led to a great experience for her daughter, who is excited to learn about her heritage and culture.
Oregon Irish Dance Academy is conveniently located at 1625 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR 97232. This prime location places it in a central, accessible part of the city, making it easy for families from all over the Portland metro area to attend classes. The academy operates out of The Children's Gym, a secure-access facility that provides a safe and well-equipped environment for students. The studio's commitment to accessibility is evident in its facilities, which include a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, seating, and toilet. Additionally, the studio offers gender-neutral toilets and identifies as LGBTQ+ friendly and a transgender safe space, ensuring that everyone who walks through the door feels welcomed and respected. For those who drive, the availability of free street parking is a convenient and highly appreciated amenity.
OIDA provides a wide range of services that cater to dancers of all ages and abilities, with a focus on both technical skill and creative expression.
Youth Classes: The academy offers classes for children of all ages, from preschoolers to teens. The curriculum is carefully designed to be age-appropriate and progressive, introducing concepts in a fun and engaging way. New students are welcome to join at any time of year and can even take a free trial class to see if Irish dancing is a good fit.
Adult Irish Dancing: For adults looking to learn a new skill, get a great workout, and connect with a community, OIDA offers adult classes. These are perfect for beginners who want to explore the world of Irish dance in a supportive environment.
Recreational and Competitive Options: OIDA is a fully non-competitive program, which is a major draw for families who want a stress-free experience. However, they also offer a "Performance Team" for those who want to showcase their skills on stage in shows and festivals, providing a sense of achievement without the pressure of formal competitions.
Irish Dance Workshops and Camps: The academy hosts various workshops and highly popular "Dance Summer Camps" and "Day Camps for kids." These camps provide an immersive and fun way for children to learn Irish dance, make new friends, and participate in engaging activities like crafts and storytelling.
Heavy and Light Shoe Dancing: OIDA teaches both light shoe and heavy shoe dancing from the very first class. This ensures that students get a comprehensive education in all aspects of Irish dance, from the high-flying, graceful movements of the light shoe to the rhythmic, percussive sounds of the heavy shoe.
Social Dance & Ceili Dancing: Beyond solo work, OIDA emphasizes "Ceili" (social group dancing), which is a key part of Irish culture. These group classes teach traditional routines and foster a sense of teamwork and community.
What truly makes Oregon Irish Dance Academy a standout is its unique set of features and highlights.
Non-Competitive Philosophy: This is the studio's defining feature. By focusing on fun, friendship, and personal growth over trophies, OIDA creates a space where dancers can truly enjoy the art form and feel successful at their own pace. This is a crucial distinction that many parents and students appreciate.
Talented and Kind Instructors: Co-founders Christina and Victoria White are not only highly accomplished Irish dancers with international experience but are also incredibly compassionate and dedicated teachers. Their ability to connect with students and make learning joyful is a major reason for the academy's success.
Community and Friendship: Reviews consistently highlight the strong sense of community. The academy becomes a "second family" for students, offering a supportive network that extends beyond dance class. This is invaluable for the social and emotional development of young people.
Accessibility and Inclusivity: OIDA’s commitment to providing a wheelchair-accessible, LGBTQ+ friendly, and transgender safe space makes it a truly welcoming place for everyone in the community.
Creative and Educational Curriculum: The classes are not just about steps; they are about understanding the culture and history of Irish dance. The instructors use a variety of props, games, and unique teaching methods to make learning both effective and memorable, as seen in the "borrowing system for the shoes" and the engaging mix of play and instruction.

My high school age daughter has been dancing there since she was in preschool, and it has been an absolute joy to watch her grow and thrive in their supportive and nurturing environment. The teachers are not only incredibly talented and knowledgeable, but they are also the kindest, most positive people you could ever hope to meet. They create a space where every dancer feels valued and encouraged, regardless of their skill level or experience. The group of dancers has become like a second family to her, offering unwavering support, friendship, and fun outside of school. They have truly found a special bond through their shared love of dance.
May 29 · Alicia M.My daughter has been going to Oregon Irish Dance Academy for an over a year. She started in pre-Irish and is now at beginner. Miss Victoria and her sister make learning Irish dance fun for the young kids by mixing instruction and playing. They has a borrowing system between parents for the shoes which is great . I love seeing my daughter learn about her heritage and culture and she’s excited about her first recital that’s coming soon. It’s been a great experience all together
