1. Starting My Journey: Teaching Kids Dance at Home
When the pandemic hit, like many other instructors, I had to quickly shift to teaching dance classes online. While I had always loved working with kids in-person, the idea of teaching kids dance at home posed a new set of challenges. My goal was to keep the energy up, ensure safety, and create a fun environment for the children—all from a distance.
It wasn’t an easy transition, but it opened my eyes to the many possibilities of online teaching and how creative we could get with the setup and delivery of dance lessons. My journey started with a lot of trial and error, but over time, I developed a structure that worked well both for me and my students.

2. Adapting to Online Teaching: Challenges and Solutions
One of the biggest challenges I faced was adjusting to teaching without the physical connection I was used to. In a traditional dance class, I can correct posture, guide movements, and provide instant feedback in person. Doing all of this online felt like a completely different world.
However, I quickly learned that virtual platforms could still provide a great space for learning. I used Zoom to host classes and focused on clear verbal instructions, visual demonstrations, and slow-paced lessons. I also encouraged parents to join in and support their children, which added an element of fun and participation. Here are a few solutions that worked for me:
- Video Demonstrations: I started recording my moves in advance so that students could watch the steps at their own pace before attempting them in class.
- Interactive Sessions: I used breakout rooms for smaller groups to work on choreography together, which helped create a sense of community even in a virtual setting.
- Regular Check-Ins: After each class, I scheduled a brief one-on-one with students or parents to check progress and discuss any difficulties.
3. Keeping Kids Engaged in Virtual Dance Classes
Engagement was another hurdle. Kids have a limited attention span, and it’s hard to maintain their focus through a screen. So, I incorporated creative techniques to keep their attention and make the lessons enjoyable. Some methods I found effective include:
- Games and Challenges: Instead of just running through a set of dance moves, I integrated dance games and challenges like freeze dance, where kids could dance until the music stopped.
- Reward Systems: I created a point system where kids could earn rewards for participation, effort, and improvement. This motivated them to stay involved and practice more at home.
- Involving Family: I encouraged parents to join in on the fun, making the experience more interactive for both the child and the family as a whole.
4. The Benefits of At-Home Kids Dance Classes
While it was difficult at first, teaching at-home kids dance classes turned out to have some unexpected benefits. The kids could practice in a familiar space, and I found that they were often more relaxed and open to trying new things at home. Plus, it allowed them to learn at their own pace and engage in more personalized feedback from me.
One of the greatest benefits, however, was the flexibility it offered to both the students and me. Classes could be scheduled at times that worked for families, and parents could observe their child's progress more closely than they would in a traditional studio setting. It also made it possible for children in remote areas to access high-quality dance instruction without the need to travel long distances.
