★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I attended the recent arangetram conducted by Ms. Sowjanya, accompanying a friend whose family hails from Umayalpuram. With this connection, I was genuinely hoping for a respectable debut performance that would honor both the family's heritage and the tradition of Bharatanatyam. What unfolded on stage, from the very first item, was nothing short of appalling. The standard of presentation was so poor, even a six-year-old beginner would have done greater justice to these pieces. This was not simply a lackluster performance—it was a complete travesty.Let me be clear: I do not hold the student or their family responsible for this debacle. The blame lies squarely with the teacher, Ms. Sowjanya, whose actions can only be described as exploitative. It is unconscionable to take advantage of parents’ emotional investment and financial commitment, only to deliver such an abysmal result. The fact that you, Ms. Sowjanya, continue to masquerade as a torchbearer of the Adyar Lakshman legacy is an insult to the art form and to all those who have dedicated their lives to upholding its standards. The accompanying artists, who accepted gifts and lavished praise on this disaster of a show, are complicit in this charade. To see respected names forced to participate in this farce, and to witness the MC reading out a litany of dubious awards and fake accolades, was deeply distressing. The stage was not a platform for showcasing genuine talent, but a vehicle for self-promotion and hollow pageantry.Your decision to insert “Aigiri Nandini” as a central piece in the arangetram, while the extended family and those familiar with the true standards of Bharatanatyam looked on in disbelief, was the final insult. The laughter and derision from those who actually understand this art form spoke volumes.Shame on you, Ms. Sowjanya, for bringing disrepute to the title of Guru. Shame on you for preying on the hopes of innocent parents and children. Shame on you for using your platform to bestow meaningless awards on established artists, further cheapening the significance of genuine recognition. You have not only failed your student—you have failed the entire community of dance educators and practitioners who strive to maintain the dignity and integrity of Bharatanatyam. You should be deeply ashamed.REPLY TO YOUR REJIONDER- Ms Soujanya - many in the audience were shocked by you introducing Aigiri Nandini in a traditional revered Varnam - Mathe. No Guru of yours will approve of such mutilation ! Is this your guidance to a student and family ? Shame on you ! In fact respected dancers in the audience were bizzarely shaken up by this mutilation administered by you .I repeat - THE CHILD AND THE PARENTS ARE INNOCENT VICTIMS IN THIS EXPOLITATION BY YOU . DONOT USE THEM AS HUMAN SHIELDS AND COVER AND HIDE BEHIND YOUR INCOMEPETENCE.You mention subtly ( The items were selected by you on the capability of the Child) Do you not have the intelligence to select the appropriate items, the child could have done more justice? This really questions your capability and undrstanding to teach this art form. If you really had any respect for this art form you MUST learn it first and certainly not teach and lastly conduct and arangetram - that too in Chennai - Mylapore, with the most sccomplished and seasoned accompanying artists like Radha Badri etc.
July 19 · VIVEK AGNIHOTRIMy daughter has been learning Bharatnatyam from Ms. Soujanya for the last few years. She is the best teacher I could have asked for my daughter!!! September 20 · priya rajeevSoujanya Madhusudan is a very dedicated teacher who gives each student instructions personally when needed. I've been to different classical teachers for my daughter but Mrs.Soujanya is the best.I see drastic improvement in my daughter's natyam after coming to Soujanya.I am so happy for my daughter to have a Guru like her.I highly recommend Bharata Darshana school of dance. In my daughter's words - I love my teacher and want to teach dance like her when I grow up and perform like her.Best teacher!
August 13 · Haritha DuggIf you are looking for an authentic art form to learn, you have arrived at the right page. I am so fortunate to be trained Bharatanatyam in Kalakshetra style under Guru Soujanya Madhusudan. Her passion towards the art is itself a huge motivation to go to the class. She is one of those dance gurus who will never compromise with the postures. Well, one can see these qualities in most dance gurus, but Soujanya ma'am is a very selfless person too. I am an immigrant grad student with financial problems and she gives me classes at heavily discounted rates. Only a person who truly and purely loves art can do such a thing. Art for her has a higher position than business. I, therefore, recommend anyone to join Bharatha Darshana dance school without any reservation.
