★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My son started taking flamenco guitar lessons with Eric when he was 12 years old. An aspiring fingerstyle guitarist, he started flamenco lessons to improve his technique. Now 16, he continues on because he loves the music, enjoys his lessons, and sees his progress - his technique and musicianship have improved dramatically both as a fingerstyle and flamenco guitarist.Eric was recommended to us by a well-regarded classical guitar teacher in Seattle who referred to him as 'the best flamenco teacher in the Northwest'. We agree - we feel really lucky our son is able to learn in person from an amazing authentic flamenco guitarist, performer and composer who also knows how to teach. He has learned from masters in Spain, is passionate about the culture and craft and cares about passing it on. The lessons are expensive, so it is a financial commitment, but if you are a dedicated student you will definitely get out what you put in and then some.
July 14 · Eugenia ChangI started taking guitar lessons from Eric about a year ago after attending one of their shows at the Triple Door and being blown away by his skill. I was a rank beginner (and plainly not a natural talent!) but Eric is a amazingly patient teacher. He teaches in a traditional style - -its an oral tradition so he teaches without written materials - the only nod to modernity is to take a video of the assignment to practice with. I greatly enjoy my sessions with Eric, and think he's a gifted teacher as well as performer.
September 08 · Jan HasselmanEric and Encarna are the real deal. They both live and breathe flamenco. This isn't a side-gig or a pet-project for them. This is what they do, and they're incredible. On top of being gifted and active performers, both in small and large venues, they are patient, inspiring, and thoughtful teachers.I've been taking flamenco guitar lessons with Eric for the past 3 years, starting with a very minimal guitar background, and Eric's patience and teaching skills have really made a huge impact on my guitar playing ability. On top of teaching awesome music, he teaches how to practice, how to dissect a problem, and keeps you a slave to the rhythm - which is a good thing. My lessons with Eric are easily the highlight of my week.Eric and Encarna recently organized a student show, which I was lucky to be a part of. Preparing for the show really made Flamenco come to life for me. It was incredible to play for dancers and singers, and Encarna did a fantastic job of getting the dancers ready and keeping us guitarists in line. She brings a lot of life to any room she's in and it's an absolute joy to work with her.If I had one word to describe Eric and Encarna, it would be 'authentic'. I can't recommend studying flamenco with them enough. I'm hooked, you'll be hooked, you're CD collection will grow, your appreciation for the little things will flourish. They will teach you a way of life, if you let them.
January 12 · Ben OEric's lessons are authentic, fun, and supportive. He blends a deep background in classical theory with his personal experience in how Flamenco guitar is traditionally taught and played in Spain. Combined with his patient, encouraging teaching style, lessons feel challenging but not overwhelming. The pieces I've learned started with basic techniques and have added in new ones as I improved, but all have actually been fun to play as well. Rhythms can be complex in Flamenco, but they're introduced in a logical and digestible progression. Each of my lessons ends with recordings -- usually technique fixes on previous material and demonstration and playthrough of new material -- that I can reference during my practice. (I use an app that lets me vary the tempo without changing the pitch when I accompany the recording so I can start slowly). Throughout the week I often pick up on new subtleties to work on, so I find this an extremely effective way to practice.Learning with Eric includes not just playing Flamenco guitar, but also its history and tradition. A uniquely helpful element of Flamenco Seattle in particular is Eric's partnership with Encarna. She has been gracious enough to demonstrate for me at times how percussion and voice leave space for the guitar. It's very helpful to have context from the beginning of how a Flamenco guitarist should accompany the other performers.
December 31 · J RobertsEncarna is a fantastic teacher. She brings a wonderful combination of passion, humor, and depth of knowledge to her teaching. She offers a wide variety of choreography and palos and is responsive to student requests. She breaks down the elements of flamenco dance into parts that makes learning the art of improvisation approachable and fun. She is always positive and encouraging while challenging us to improve. Encarna also provides opportunities for her students to participate in a range of performances from very casual to more structured theater productions. I highly recommend Seattle Flamenco!
